time ~ about one week before the L'Enver's wedding.
It was just around the corner into Mont Nuit and to the Clinic and blessedly so, I could feel it swelling and it wasn't pleasant.
The carriage rolled to a stop and the coachman jumped down, "Here we are miss," he said briefly, smiling reassuringly as he reached in to pick me up. I placed my arms around his neck, trying not to hold too tightly and let him help me out of the carriage.
Someone had obviously ran ahead and gave notice, the doors were open and an assistant, I supposed, was already waiting to help me inside.

The note had been taken by a panting apprentice from House Eglantine. I smiled, recognizing my Lady Calandria's penmanship, but frowned at the news. If a dancer had an injury, this could be exceedingly serious.
Joelle was advised to cancel my appointment. It was with Lord Lafrousse, an annoying perk of a man who thought wine was a solution to everything and came regularly with horrible infections in his nether regions. I wouldn't say so, but I was rather relieved to have an excuse to put off his consultation. An adept's ankle was much more pleasant to examine than a horrible man's genitalia.
Soon enough, the doors were opened and she was brought in. Foregoing our usual procedure, I had her installed in the examination room, as white and pleasant as usual. She was looking frail and forlorn, and I tried to smile to reassure her.
"Good afternoon, My Lady of Eglantine. Siegfried de Strasbourg, your chirurgeon for the day," I told her as I already knelt to examine her ankle. It was rather swollen. As I looked at the shape, and auscultated the wounded articulation, I asked, "Tell me how it happened, if you will?"

"I was practicing a new routine and landed wrong after a jump. I guess I was pushing myself a bit too much." I told him as he set right to work. "I'm Reina, by the way." I added, watching curiously, worry creasing a frown across my face.

"Reina, that's a pretty name," I told her as I pressed a pressure point. "Can you rotate your ankle, please? At least attempt it? Don't push too hard, though, if it hurts."

I tried to move my ankle and found it hurt, a lot. I only turned it an inch or so, but I could do it, "Ah, that's as far as it will go." I told him, "After that it hurts too much."

Small wonder. The whole thing was about as big as an apple from the Somerville orchards. A good sprain, that's what she had, no doubt.
"But you did move it, which is a good sign: you see, if it were broken, you could not move it. You are in luck, Reina no Eglantine."
I stepped over to the counter, and prepared a mixture of eucalyptus and rosemary oil, which I proceeded to dab on her ankle.

He had a nice touch, skillful and precise just like an artist. Though I guess that's what you could call what he did, an art, it did take a lot of skill, that's to be sure. "Thank you," I said, still watching him work.
After a moment I became curious, "How long will it take to heal?" I asked.

"Just about a few weeks," I replied as I finished with the ointment. I washed my hands over the basin, and said, "in the mean time, you are not to walk on your foot, until it is healed. I will give you some of this, it will relax your muscles, and help your articulation deflate."
I moved to another portion of the counter, and prepared a pot of salve as I continued my instruction. "Daily, you will spend half an hour, alternating hot and cold baths for your ankle. No need to use burning water, no, just let it be hot enough for the contrast. It will reduce it as well. At night, put your leg up to sleep. The more studiously you follow these instructions, the faster you will heal."
I walked back to her with the salve, and put it in her hand. "Do you have any questions?" I asked with a gentle smile.

I listened well as he spoke and made a mental note for each step and nodded, "Yes, I believe I've got it, thank you." I smiled, "If I do I'll be sure to ask," I added, swinging my leg gently off the table and looking at him.
"I appreciate your handy work, I can already tell it's feeling better." Three weeks wasn't so bad, but that did mean I was going to miss the wedding and that wasn't good, but life happens. "Would you mind calling my coachman back, I'm sure they are just outside."

"Of course," I replied with an amicable smile. I stepped out a moment, and gave an instruction to the assistant. She would fetch them. "I would like to see you in a week, to track progress," I added, turning back to the adept.

"Of course." I nodded, "I'll be here," I told him, giving him my best smile I could manage. I was sure I wouldn't forget either, "I'm very thankful for your help," I said, looking for something else to say, "I'll be sure to stay out of trouble for a while, at least until I'm healed," I said, grinning as I let the coachman help me out the door.
Dancing was my life, my light and my joy, and even though it could be dangerous at times, I knew I would always love it. I would also try my best to remember the warning I had just been given.

I watched her go, smiling amicably, and closed the door on her with a sigh. Self-inflicted pain, yet again. Why was this such a recurrent motive in my life, I wondered....
I closed the door to my office, and proceeded to write to her Dowayne, to send the invoice along.
