"Since I was a baby," I said. "Someone left me there." It seemed blunt to put it that way, but it was the truth, and since I had no memory of it, it didn't hurt much to speak of it.

"Do you like it there?" I asked, her marque growing under my tools.

"Yes," I said, "though I don't think I'll be there forever."

"Have you definite plans or just a desire to see other places?" I asked. The work was going faster now that she was not as tense, her skin more accepting of the inks.

"Not definite," I said hesitantly. "But I know what I would like to do."

"It's good to have plans for your future," I said, smiling.

"I think so," I said. "They're very motivating plans." I paused. "Was being a marquist your plan?"

"Not at all. I wanted to do anything as long as I could draw and paint. My parents sent me to Eglantine, but I had no interest in the other adeptly pursuits. Master Kachine came upon me, paid my marque price, and trained me as his apprentice," I told her.

"I see," I said. "When did this all happen?"

"Leaving Eglantine? Ten years ago," I answered as my hands moved on to the final part of her marque that I would be working on today.

"What's it like?" I asked. "To be free of the Night Court."

"That's a hard one for me to answer, since I was never a true adept. It was a relief because I could focus on my true passion, art, but then again I'm certain I missed out on some of the greater social experiences," I answered.

"I'm not sure if that's true," I said thoughtfully. "We teach, we learn, we spend time with our friends, we go to fetes. Aside from our sacred services, we're like everyone else."

"I didn't mean to imply that you weren't like everyone else, just that as an adept you are more exposed to social situations than I was as the only apprentice to a single master."
I straightened up. "Finished. Don't move though, the ink still needs to set."

"I hope so as well," I replied as I fetched the salve and bandages. She hadn't asked to see the work, so I left the mirrors where they were.
Carefully, I applied the salve to her freshly inked skin. "This will help with the pain and healing. I'll send a little jar home with you." I wiped my hand off. "If you would sit up now, I can bandage you."

"Alright." Slowly, I sat up, holding the robe up to my breasts to hide them.

With utter professionalism, I wrapped her in the required bandages, making sure not to dislodge the robe as I did.
"All done," I said with a smile. "Do you need help down?"

Moving things out of her way, I carefully helped her down and to her feet. I smiled and then turned back to the counter cleaning up some more, thus facing my back to her so if she didn't feel up to putting the robe on she could still have her privacy.

I quietly made my way to the screens where my clothes were. I attempted to dress, putting on my shift and sliding my dress as carefully as possible over my head. The bandages were not very lucky, though I looked a bit like I had fattened up about the hips. Once dressed, I reemerged.

Smiling, I watched her go then began to clean up. She was a lovely girl and I really hoped she'd had a better experience this time getting marqued.
