The day after my assignation with Gabriel, I dressed simply and walked down to Salon Kachine. Gabriel's purse was heavy on my wrist and I wondered how many inches it would pay for. Carefully, I pushed the door open. It was quiet inside, and I didn't see the proprietor.

I was just coming down the stairs when I heard the front door open. I took a few long strides and was in the front in no time.
"Hello," I said, smiling.

The proprietor, Master Kachine no doubt, was down the stairs nearly as soon as I entered the shop. "Good morning," I greeted him. "Are you Master Kachine, the marquist?" It didn't hurt to check.

"I am, but please call me Darien," I replied with a smile.

"Darien, then," I said, smiling a little shyly. "I'm Maeve no Heliotrope. I received a patron gift that I hope will be sufficient for an inch or two more on my marque." Reaching into my pocket, I procured Gabriel's purse and offered it to him.

Accepting the pouch, I opened it and glanced inside.
"How far along is your marque at the moment?" I asked.

This part was always shameful. "Three and a half inches," I said.

"This will get you another inch and three-quarters should you want to spend it all," I told her with a smile.

"I do," I said. The sooner the marque was finished, the sooner I was free to be with Xaurora.

"I'm free now if you'd like it done right away. I had a cancellation so the spot can be yours if you wish," I told her with a smile.

I nodded. "I'd like that very much, thank you," I said. I looked around the shop. "Where can I strip?" I asked quietly.

"Through here," I said, leading her into the back. I indicated the screened area. "There's robes back there if you like."

"Thank you," I said, going to where he directed me. Once behind the screen, I stripped off my dress and undergarments before slipping on a robe. I came out and stood expectantly, waiting to be directed.

As she undressed, I readied all my instruments and lit the candles in the corner.
"Lay on the table if you would," I said with a smile when she appeared again. "I'll need to take a few measurements before I begin."

I went to the table and loosened the robe so it fell from my shoulders. Quickly I moved one arm to cover my breasts before lying down and folding my arms under my head. "Ready," I said.

Bringing my tools, I went to the table. I looked at what was done of her marque so far and gently ran my hands over her back.
"How long since you've had any work done?" I asked.

"About three months or so," I said, relaxing under his gentle touch.

"Was it a pleasant experience?" I asked, recognizing the marquist who'd worked on her before from the style. I began taking a few measurements.

"Pleasant?" I asked incredulously. "I suppose it was as pleasant as a marquing can be."

I ran my hands over her back again, seeking to soothe her some. "Some marquists are less concerned about how it affects the adepts than others. I hope you find your time here less stressing."

Having the notations I needed, I set those tools aside.
"It will be a moment while I prepare the dyes," I told her as I returned to the counter. "Now is the time if you'd like to move around or anything."

"Thank you," I said. Pulling the robe back on over my shoulders, I rose and stretched, getting the heebie-jeebies out before the marquing began. Once thoroughly through with my fidgets, I lay back down as I had been.

She had settled back down when I returned to the table, setting the dyes and tools nearby. I ran my hands over her back again, smoothing her skin.
"Ready?" I asked, not wanting to start if she needed more time.

Taking up my tools, I dipped the needles in ink and put them where I was to begin.
"Here we go, tell me if you need a break" I told her, bringing the taper down.

Gods above, but it stung! Still, his hands were strong and he seemed earnest so I bit back a whimper and let him continue.

She tensed and I knew it would only make it worse.
"Breathe," I said in a soothing tone, continuing to work. "Slow and even. It helps."

I inhaled deeply, and exhaled, though my breath out held the tiniest squeak of pain.

"How long have you been at Heliotrope?" I asked, wondering if she was the sort who benefited from talking to keep her mind from focusing fully on the pain. My hands kept working, steady and sure.
