"Thank you," I said, smiling. "Her parents were certain she'd never sit still for me, but she was an angel."

"I'm sure she was just charmed enough by you that she was too enamored to move," I said, giving him a wide, teasing smile.

I flushed slightly at her tease. "Perhaps," I said with a chuckle.

I glanced back at the painting again, looking over the detailing before finally satisfying myself enough to straighten again. "There's a book written by Jaquel de Duras on art and the history of different strokes and techniques. Have you ever read it?"

"Oh yes," I answered, brightening and going to a drawer to retrieve my well worn copy. "I have studied this book for as long as I can recall."

"Oh good," I said, smiling wider to see that he had read it after all. "I was going to recommend it to you if not, but it's nice to see that I don't have to. I don't paint, but even I found it interesting."

"He a marvelous writer," I agreed, nodding slightly. "he had an amazing talent for explaining even the smallest detail."

"He really does," I agreed, then gestured lightly to Dariens own painting. "As do you, too. There is a lot of detailing in the dogs fur, after all. It must have taken ages to do."

"It did take a bit, the dog was not as cooperative as the girl," I replied, grinning and setting my book down.

I smiled, picking my cup back up again and taking a small drink. "Smaller dogs usually aren't, or so I've noticed. have you ever had any before, yourself?"

"No, I've never had any pets," I told her, shaking my head slightly. "What about you?"

"I had a bird growing up; a yellow finch to be exact." I smiled and took another sip; it was getting cold and I wanted to finish it. "I have always wanted a little dog, though. I just have never gotten one... Someday, though."

"Well, when you do I shall paint you two together in celebration," I told her, smiling.
I noticed the angle of the sun through the window. "Did you still want to do your other errands? We should likely leave soon if you do."

"Oh," I said, glancing quickly at the window. "You're quite right. Are you sure you still would like to come? I'm afraid I might bore you terribly." I smiled as I set my cup down once more, my hands brushing at my skirts.

"You are not boring in the least," I said with a smile.
Before I could continue, there was a frantic knocking on the door below. "Pardon me for a moment," I said, my brow furrowing as I excused myself to see what was happening.

The intensity of the knock was alarming to say the least, and when Darien excused himself I simply nodded, and waited, lingering by his painting to occupy myself while he was gone.

I rushed back upstairs, skidding to a stop in the kitchen area.
"My mother's taken ill," I said breathlessly. "I'm sorry, I need to go to her." I glanced around and reached for my jacket. "I'd like to finish this another time if possible."

"Oh no," I murmured as he explained himself, but in his to-be-expected rush of emotions, I didn't doubt if he didn't hear me.
"I'm so sorry," I said. "Of course, at you're leisure; I'll take my leave now." I moved across his place and leaned up, kissing his cheek. "I hope she's well, Darien." A soft, supporting smile came to my mouth before I turned away, heading quickly down his stairwell and out, leaving as quickly and nimbly as I could so he was able to get to his mother.

Beyond grateful for the grace with which Aza handled the situation, I gathered a few other things and hurried off to my parent's home.
