I stood outside the modest shop that belonged to the marquist Clandria had recommended to me. He wasn't the Night Court marquist I had been seeing for all these years. It didn't seem right to go to him when I was no longer an adept, and would never be part of the Night Court again.
I sighed, shivering slightly in my warm blue cloak. Even though spring was nearly here, I never felt warm until high summer. I thought longingly of Jasper for a moment, his strangely beautiful tattoos on his arms and wrists. I wished he could bear witness to my freedom today, but I'd heard no word from him in far too long.
Straightening my back, I touched the new resolve in me, made myself be brave. I opened the shop door and walked in.
A servant of mine had made the appointment for me weeks ago. I had the necessary money and even a letter from Calandria explaining the gist of the situation. I was afraid of someone questioning where I had gotten all the money this would take. Hoolies, my marque was only 2/3rds done. To finish it was going to be exorbitant.
Lucky my father had been obscenely rich, no? I laughed quietly to myself in the empty shop. It was not a happy sound.

I had been in the back, making ready for the appointment when I heard the door. Stepping through the curtain, I was greeted by a strained laugh and a sapphire wrapped girl.
"Good day," I said, smiling softly and stepping fully into the front room

I was startled by the man's sudden appearance. Well, mayhap not so sudden. I had been to wrapped up in my own bitterness.
He was lovely, intense, with that air one from Eglantine recognizes as artistic passion. I fought the urge to blush and look down. I was not an adept any longer. I was brave. Damn it, I was!
"Are you the marquist? Messier Kachine? I'm Khalidah no Egl-, Khalidah Clavel." Yes. That was my name now. No more Celestine, no more adept, not after today. It was a little like dying myself.

"I am, yes," I replied, smiling still though a bit warmer and kinder now. Her apprehension was palpable. "Welcome to my salon, Comtesse. Please, just call me Darien."
The letter that had had been sent to arrange her appointment had given the details of the situation, so I was not surprised at her nervousness, that was quite a life change.
"May I take your cloak?" I asked politely.

I unfastened the pearl broach at my shoulder and shrugged out of the soft cloak, gathering it in my hands and passing it to him. I smoothed the white gown underneath. I was in mourning, and followed the Akkadian tradition. How could black be the color of death when all corpses looked so pale and white?
"Thank you, Darien. And please, I am still just Khalidah until my marque is finished."

Taking her cloak, I hung it carefully on a peg on the wall.
"As you wish, Khalidah," I said, smiling.
"Would you care to come in the back or would you like to speak out here?" I asked, indicating the set of chairs. "Have you decided how you would like your marque finished?"

"Is it warmer in the back?" I asked before I really thought of what I was saying. Without my cloak I felt a little chilled. I smiled apologetically and made a small gesture with my hand, "I'm always cold, it seems. I miss the summer." and the desert. Which was an interesting thought...
I wasn't to be an adept anymore, and had completed my contract in a most unusual way. Did I have to have the same marque as did all members of my former House? It was for me now, not my House, and should symbolize that, and my freedom.
"It doesn't have to be the traditional Eglantine pattern?"

"It is warmer in the back," I said, smiling and holding the curtain aside so she could make her way into the back where I had the temperature gauged for an unclothed person to be on my table.
"As for your marque, perhaps I misunderstood. I was under the impression you'd been paid out of your contract with Eglantine. If that is the case, then no it doesn't have to be the traditional finish to your marque."
