The afternoon was stretching long as I sat in one of the padded leather chairs in my library, soaking in the absolute silence while divulging in a book on numbers. I didn't read far enough, and while this paticular thing wasn't all that much fun to read, it was informative.
I'd just propped my foot up on a matching footstool when a soft knock sounded at the door, rousing my attention. "My Lord?" A decidedly feminine voice called, chiming in a pleasant tone, "There is a man here to see you. The only name he will give me is Jonas."
"Jonas?" I said, blinking as I shut the book. "I only know one... Eluas balls!" Tossing it down on the table, I swept past her out of the room and headed down the stairs, recieving my guest at the door rather than in the appointed room.
"She's here, isn't she?" I said, forsaking all pleasantries. "It's that or Father has passed, and I refuse to believe the second."
Jonas stood slack-jawed for a moment; apparently I'd been gone long enough for him to have thought I wouldn't have figured it out. "She is," he said, giving a low bow. "It's good to see you, Kendrick."
I sighed as he straightened, reaching out and clasping the mans shoulder with a friendly touch. "You too, Jonas. Forgive me." Leading him in, I called to the servants to fetch a basin for him to freshen himself at, and turned back to him. "At least you came with her - I can ask no more than that. She's been as stubborn as a mule from the day she was born, always digging her heels in when she should trot along." Exhasperation filled my voice, and to my surprise, Jonas' white teeth flashed in obvious amusement. "You're quite right, my Lord," he said, then turned toward the servant whom held the bowl for his use.
Giving him a moment to clean his face and hands, I called once more for my carriage to be made ready and my overcoat to be brought. By the time Jonas was through and dried, I was standing at the door, the carriage waiting outside. "She's not in any sort of trouble, is she?" I asked, my brows knotting downward. "Though, then again, knowing Julie she's likely up to her eyes in it by now."
Jonas laughed as I shut the door, the sound of it echoing through the townhome where the servants stood, blinking in confusement.
