"Precisely." It would have been a better thing if my aunt wasn't ill and my uncle depressed over the death of my cousin, but Ana was close to her family and likely knew how many levels the recent events affected me on. "What of yourself? I hear it was a bit more of a struggle."

"I was merely glad Father trained me for it since childhood. The months after the funeral were the toughest struggle I've ever had." I shook my head. "I was accepted eventually, but they didn't just let me waltz in. I swear, clan members get more acidic with age."

"But you prevailed," I noted with a smile. "And really, if they let you in easily wouldn't you wonder what was wrong?"

I laughed then, truly laughed. "So you do understand us."

"Isn't that a terrifying thought?" I asked, chuckling in response to her far-too-rare laugh.

"Well you were bound to be twisted, this just adds another coil." I replied, still chuckling.

"Oh, yes, I understand," I jested.
Somewhere a clock chimed and I sighed. "Unfortunately, other engagements call." Softly I brought my hand to her cheek again.

I turned my head and laid a kiss on his fingers. "It was good to see you again." I responded, as if we weren't going to see each other in a few nights.

"And you," I told her, tracing her lips lightly. "Let's not let it be so long until next time."

"Hmm, another fourteen years would put us closing in on fifty. I doubt I'd be doing any sneaking by then." I smiled at the reference to our clandestine meeting, and resisted the urge to bite his finger. I would only have done it lightly of course...

"Oh, I doubt I'll be out of shape that quickly," I replied with a smirk as my finger traced along her cheekbone to her ear, then down the line of her neck. "So, should I see myself out or will you walk with me?"

"I'm not decrepit yet." I told him with a teasing smile, rising slowly and letting his wandering finger trail where it would on the way up.

Asshe moved my hand brushed the side of her breast, then over her hip before I sighed and rose, placing my glass to the side. "I don't think you could be decrepit," I told her. "You'll always look young and then just drop at about a hundred years old."

I smiled. "I'm sure there will be people who would rather I not see my hundredth year." We went to the stained glass door and I opened it for him. He was after all of higher rank. It would also give the idea that I wanted him to leave. We were acting again, just like the first time we met, in front of the horse trader. The opposite impression, but the same game.

A slight, tight expression took my face, though my eyes flashed. It had been far too long. Quickly I dipped into a barely polite bow, but my expression took on the barest hint of rakish charm. "What do some people know?" I replied.

"Sometime, my lord," I told him, still holding the door for him, "More than you'd care for them to. It was ever so kind of you to drop by." I held myself just so as I curtsied, exactly as politeness dictated and not a fraction more subservient.

Nodding, I turned and walked out, then out her main door. She'd be at the place, I knew it. And I'd be waiting, as before.
