I watched as the maids finished unpacking my things and putting them away. It was a little odd, for though I had been in this house many times, it has always been for visits with only the necessities of my stay coming with me. Now, all of my things were here and this was home.
I harbored no illusions as to why my father had sent me to the City, one only had to look at the portrait of my mother in his bedroom to know why. For me, it was like gazing into a looking glass whenever I studied the painting.
Smiling and nodding, I dismissed the maids and walked out onto the balcony. My room faced east so it was bathed in the light of both the rising sun and moon and I adored the little balcony. When the weather warmed, I would purchase a couch for out here so I could sleep in the open air.
The house was not a large one, but that suited me as well. I did not want to me mistress of an army of servants and have to spend my time running an estate. I would do enough of that when it was time for me to take over my family's estate.
No, this was my time. Time for me to find out who I truly was and explore the parts of myself that had gone unsatisfied in the rather secluded place I had grown up.
I breathed deep of the City's air and tasted the sweetness of freedom.
