I chased Marie down the riverbank, leg muscles pumping mightily. She ran ahead, brown curls streaming out behind her, her every day dress torn and muddy. We were fifteen, yet we loved each other with all the passion of adults, and none of the complications.
Leaping, I tackled her, dragging her down into the reeds. “Gotcha!”
She squealed and tried to get free, but I held fast. “Pierre!” she exclaimed. “We must go back soon.”
“Not yet,” I said. “Tell me you love me, and I’ll let you go.”
She pouted, but relented. “I love you,” she said.
“I’m going to marry you someday, Marie,” I claimed. “We’ll have twenty children because I won’t be able to stop showing you how much I love you.”
She blushed. “Pierre, don’t say such things.”
“Why? They’re the truth.”
“Marie!”
Marie shot up. “There’s the housekeeper. I’ll see you after dinner.”
Reluctantly I let her go, then rolled back into the reeds, getting mud all over me. I was perfectly and gloriously content. Nothing was better than this.
