Just this once, I allowed myself to be selfish. I took my carriage home from the palace, leaving Gratien to find his own way home. I didn’t say goodbye to him, or Sébastien. I didn’t care if they worried, I only thought of what needed to be done before I left.
I got home, and woke Jeanne. She wanted to pester me into telling her what was wrong, but I refused to talk about it. I just told her to pack, that I was going home for a week or so. I went to my study, and sat down to write the correspondences I knew I needed to. Gratien’s note was the most difficult to write, but I didn’t lie.
I left a note for Mathieu wedged in his bedroom door right above the knob.
Mathi,
I’ve gone home for a few days. I’ll spare you the lecture, but don’t forget about tea with Lady d’Arie on Tuesday. Mother wants you to meet her daughter. I’ll be back soon enough.

Upon return home I found an note stuck in my door. Opening it I found it was from my sister. A bit of reading between the lines told me something was bothering her and that alone put a smile on my face. After my last attempt at making peace had failed I figured the labor was not worth the effort when it came to Juliette. Of course the contents of the note were troubling in and of themselves. Yes, those around me were playing match maker it seemed. I wadded up the note as I entered my room and tossed it in the rubbish. Ah well, I would do what I had been doing for some time now and that was soldier on stoically.
