Just between you and I…
The voice whispered it in my ear, like he was standing right behind me. His arms wrapped themselves around me, and I leaned back against him, so comfortable and at peace. We stood on a cliff, the sea pounding out a rhythm far below us. Just think, Gratien and I could do this for the rest of our lives. But with that thought, something went sour. I turned to look behind me, to see his handsome face, and I was suddenly left, cast away. I stumbled and fell to my knees.
The scene changed. I was kneeling, work gloves heavy on my hands, rooting at a carrot. A basket full of them sat beside me on the ground. I knew Tom was disapproving, didn’t think it was fit work for a duchese. A gleeful shriek met my ears, and I was almost bowled over by a small warm body. I hugged her back, laughing. Go see Papa, I told her. Gratien was standing just inside the door to the house, watching with a smile on his face. She giggled and ran towards him, arms held out for another hug.
Just between you and I…
The voice slid into my soul, the speaker behind me again. I whipped around to find myself dancing with Reese. It was my wedding night, but I couldn’t see Gratien anywhere. The smile on his face looked almost painful. He leaned in to whisper in my ear. My little Mouse… And I, usually so graceful, stumbled. Are you all right? His voice was concerned, his hands guiding me back to steadiness. I nodded a bit dumbly, and he smiled again. It was now I realized it was with joy. So much joy he could hardly stand it. The bright colours melted away to be replaced with soft blues and greys.
We were back on the cliff by the sea. I felt so happy, so protected with those arms, the voice touching something deep within me. Just between you and I… But when I turned to the voice, it was blindly. The lips that met mine weren’t Gratien’s.
I woke with a gasp, thrashing in my sheets until the feeling of arms around me faded. I went to the window, opening it fully and breathing in the cool night air. No hint of the sea, thank the gods.
Now what in the seven hells was that all about?
