Some of my new gown and gloves had arrived from Eglantine today, and I spent the morning with Simon, the adept who had designed them all. Most were practical if more fashionable than anything I owned, but I had two fancy gowns along with the everyday ones.
I tried each of them on to find the fits perfect, and the gown I was to wear for Longest Night was no exception. I had not wanted a dress quite like the one I wore to Midwinter, not having a masque to hide behind at the Palace, but what I saw in the mirror was still stunning.
The rich brown velvet was luxurious, with a square neckline that laced up. The laces were brown against a forest green rectangular inset. My gloves, extra long sice the gown had no sleeves, were the same green but in silk. The whole effect was slimming, accenting my waist and breasts, as I noticed with both excitement and dread. I took a few steps to test, and found it easy to dance in, which pleased me.
He saw my tentative smile, and reached into a pocket. "I took the liberty of finding the right colours for you." Simon said, handing me a slim box. Inside were powders and kohl, including just the correct shade of green to go with my outfit. I truly smiled then.
