Part 2 : Bad News on Graduation Day
I awoke this morning feeling refreshed, although I still hadn't heard from my parents, whom I thought would have written me. Then I remembered that my parents may have come to surprise me. It would not be the first time that they have done this. I laid in bed waiting for Delia to began preparing me for my graduation. Between her, Georgeta and Serban I will really miss being her. And hopefully father will allow me to bring Serban back with me. I really do like him, and I think he would make a fine husband.
Almost as if I spoke her into existence, Delia walked into my room. "Good morning Lady Tempeste, did you rest well?" I smiled sweetly at her as I do every morning when she asked me the same question, "Yes, Delia. I slept as if I were dreaming" She chuckled at me. "Dreaming you were doing. My brother wanted me to tell you that he will not be able to meet your parents this evening after the graduation. Our Father has me business that Serban needs to assist him with." I gasped. How could I not know that the servant that I have come to love so dearly was the sister of the man that I have cared deeply for! What a fool I am? Could I have been so blind not to notice the same dark hypnotic eyes, or the black as tar curly hair? "S-s-serban is your b-b-brother?" I could tell by the shock in her eyes that she realized that I had not known, and nodded her head. "Yes, my lady. Indeed he is my brother, younger than me by 5 years. Our entire family works here, even our mother, Georgeta." I felt all the color drain from my face, and could feel my mouth open in shock. Delia simply smiled at me as she went about opening the curtains. "I guess my brother didn't tell you. Although I could see why..." I jumped out of bed and ran over to where she was grabbing her and turning her to me. "Why...why wouldn't he tell me...what do you know that I don't!" I saw the terror in her eyes, followed by a painful glaze. I looked down and could tell that I was hurting her and let her go. "I'm sorry..." as I took a step back from her. "I didn't mean to hurt you...it's just that....he was wanting to marry me...but I told him that I had to ask my father...." I spilled everything to Delia, from the first day that I met her brother to the kiss. She walked up to me and embraced me, "Welcome to the family, Tempeste." I returned her embrace wondering if this is what having a sister would be like. She wiped the tears from her eyes as I did my own. "Well, we can't have you going to graduation in your night clothes. Let's get you bathed and dressed...and I will see about changing father's mind to have my brother here with you." Somewhere in my head I knew that this was what I was yearning for...a husband and siblings.
"Tempeste de Travalian...." Here was my moment. I walked proudly across the stage as I accepted my diploma, then I gazed out into the audience looking for any sign of my parents. I don't know how long I stood there, but when I knew that I didn't see their faces I completed my walk, head held high, with not a single tear in my eyes. At the end of my graduation, Serban walked up to me with a letter in his hand. On the letter I could see the seal of my family and was happy to know that a letter had come, but I wonder if I was happy because Serban was delivering it to me. I couldn't wait to open it and see what news my parents had. "Serban...you made it!" I did not know whether to hug him or not, he seemed distant, almost as if something was bothering him. "Have your parents come?" I shook my head no. He handed me the letter in his hands, "Well, the teacher bid me to give you this letter, she said that she's had it for a few days, and wanted to wait until after you graduate to give it to you in case it bears bad news." Bad news, I thought...why would the letter contain bad news, well besides the obvious that my parents would not be here. I open the letter and began to read. 'Lady Tempeste, it is with deepest sympathy that I must inform you of the death of your parents.' "Oh no....I have to go....I'm sorry" I ran to my room, packed my bags and headed home.
