“Good.” I replied with a smile. My apple core followed his, flying over to the horses to nibble on. “Though I hope you realize you’ve set the bar quite high with our outing today. This glade is gorgeous.”

"I hoped you would like it as much as I do," I told her honestly. "I've picnicked here quite a few times on my way into the mountains proper and it always centers me for what I'm about to put myself through. Something about the atmosphere is very calming."

I nodded in agreement, and Maria spoke up. "I love... la cascada." She looked to me, blushing, and I translated.
"Yes, the waterfall is definitely calming. Almost like being by the ocean."

"I think I actually like the waterfall better," I remarked. "But that could be because waterfalls come from mountains, which I also like."

"There's something about the sea though." I replied abstractly, my gaze unfocused as I remembered. "It's a living thing, breathing and singing."

Even I couldn't disagree with that. "I think it's only that this land is familiar to me; I like the ocean well enough, but such waterfalls and springs as you find in the mountains are close to my heart."

I came back from my reverie. "Home is a special thing." I agreed, smiling softly.

"More special for being away from it, isn't it?" I asked quietly, not wanting to make her pensive or irritated. "I've never been away from it for very long, and I don't know what I'd do if I was. It holds a lot of memories."

"We've spent summers in Lleida and winters in Amilcar for as long as I can remember. I think it developed a good appreciation for home." I said with an open smile. "And appreciation for getting away from it every once in a while."

"My family used to winter in the City every couple years, but we haven't for quite awhile," I admitted. "But I can understand seeing new things, though I doubt I am as open-minded to it as you are."

"You're not that old and set in your ways." I teased him as Maria brought out the pies. "Travel could be good for you."

Silently I thought of the rumors, about a war on the way and that travel due to that was the most likely to appear soon- but it was not a happy topic and so I avoided it. "The world is a big place with many adventures, and I don't scorn any part of it."

I smiled. How in character that his first thought would jump to the adventures involved. "Good, you shouldn't." I replied, still smiling. I passed his pie over, then took my share of the other.

"Do you really think I would under any circumstances?" I asked curiously, taking the pie with a nod of thanks and a smile.

"No, you strike me as the type of person who would learn a lot from travel." I replied after a thoughtful moment. "Not the type who would complain the entire way."

"You think very well of me," I replied, taking a bite of pie and then swallowing. "I'm most flattered. I think the same of you."

I smiled and looked down demurely, mouth full of pie. Once I had swallowed, I responded. "Thank you Landis. Your words mean a great deal."

"Yours mean as much to me, of that I can assure you," I replied. "Has this been enough of an outing today, or should we venture on? If we do, we may not be back by nightfall."

I was sure Landis knew the land well enough to guide us home in the dark, but I also knew what my guards would say. There had already been strong objections when I went out that morning with only Maria and my cousin. If I was irresponsible, they would not take no for an answer again.
"Why don't we return?" I suggested. "I wouldn't want to worry anyone."

"Fair enough," I replied, smiling. "Besides, showing you around so much means I need to keep myself rested."
My tone was jesting, but in reality I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep well, no matter how much I worked myself- there had been a good deal of stress lately, and reminding myself to behave around my very distantly related, terribly beautiful cousin wasn't always helping.

I smiled at his jest as we started to pack up. "I wouldn't want to keep you from your sleep." I teased boldly, just that much lending pink to my cheeks. We rose from the blanket after all the food was taken care of, and I took one end to begin folding it up.

Smoothly I grabbed the other end, beginning to help her fold. "Well, I think I can forgive you this time," I teased in return.

"That's so very kind of you, since I didn't do anything." I teased back. We had the blanket folded up in short order, though my skin burned from where his hand had brushed mine in the process.
We loaded up our mounts, untying the hobbles and swinging astride. I took one last look at the glade. Smiling from its beauty, we headed back to Verreuil.
