I laughed. “A statement like that prods the elder sister in me to prove you wrong. But I also don’t want to get you hurt, so I will resist the temptation.”

"Oh, but I was a younger brother once, and know how to avoid such barbs," I replied. "But I've also never had a sister, so perhaps they're better at it and I have no immunity, and must thank you of thinking of my safety." reaching to the bottle I picked it up and poured a fresh glass, offering some to Mercedes and Maria as well.

I laughed again as his sentence rambled on. "I do what I can. And please." I replied, referring to the offered wine. "Are you a daredevil then?"

"A bit of one," I demurred as I poured her glass. "I haven't been aware of a challenge, as yet, that I didn't immediately wish to try. Does that make me a daredevil, do you think?"

"Well, there is taking risks, and then there is being rather stupid about it." I replied, sipping my wine to wash down the last of the apple. "Having only known you for a day, I wouldn't be able to judge." I smiled impishly.

"I agree- I've just been lucky enough thusfar to access the risks before me rather well," I admitted. "Or had the consequences be such that I could easily cover my mistakes. Are you a daredevil, or do you tend toward the safe side?"

"Me?" I asked, surprised at the thought. "No, I don't think I'm a daredevil."

"Not at all?" I asked, teasing and acting surprised, then chuckled. "Well, there's no sign of kinship there. At least you like apples, or we may not pass for blood at all."

"The most rebellious thing I do is stay up late reading, and am an absolute bear the next morning." I replied, smiling a little at his tease. "I'm afraid I live a rather sedate life."

"I'm willing to concede that sedate has its moments." A thoughtful look crossed my face as I took another sip of wine. "But after being sedate for so long I have to do something active, and I hate being bored by always doing the same thing, I guess. Thus, the new experiences, and the daredevil behavior."

I smiled a little, secret smile. "I never said I always did the same things. I just don't fall out of trees."

At her expression I raised my brow again. "What, pray tell, do you do then?" I asked conversationally, eyes flashing with mirth. "Fish mermaids out of the sea?"

"Little of this, little of that. I am a dabbler. Things catch my fancy and I pursue them for a time." I raised my glass. "Wine for example."

"At least you know a bit of everything," I replied, smiling widely. "IN fact, you likely know more than I do about nearly everything- save climbing apple trees. What other things have caught your interest?"

"Music, engineering, art, weaving..." I listed off. "It drives my family crazy, they never know what I'm up to next. My latest hobby is the piano-forte, though I have very little skill."

"I know a little of engineering, but of the rest I have no experience whatsoever," I confided. "At least none that didn't come from a book. Music is my worst thing- my parents tried to tutor me in it, but eventually they let it go for the sake of their sanity."

"Well, I know a few short pieces. Cute is probably the best way to describe them, really." I said with a little smile. "Maria is really much more accomplished than I. She has real talent."

I gave Maria a wider smile and nodded in acknowledgment. "Any talent is a wonderful thing to develop," I commented before turning back to glance at Mercedes for a moment. "You have many interests, but where does your talent lie, do you think?"

Maria blushed, but smiled from the compliments, and left me to continue talking.
"I don't really know. I seem to have a knack for languages, but really nothing special." I shrugged. "I may find it, or I may spend my entire life being alright at a bunch of things. I think I would be content with either."

"Well, you're young yet and likely have a life filled with interesting hobbies ahead of you," I replied, teasing slightly as I was only a few years older than her. "And to find the things that truly make you happy, whatever they are."

"Thank you for the wise advice, oh venerable one." I returned the tease. It had become so easy to laugh and joke with him, and I was very grateful. "Is your daredevil behaviour what makes you happy?"

"It's part of it," I told her. "In a way, it all comes down to freedom. I choose when I'm going to go out and do things others consider insane, and when I'll stay inside and read. So long as I may do as I wish when my duties are done I'm content."

I shook my head. The level of freedom he was talking about was completely foreign to me. I was a lady, expected to act properly. I was a maid, expected to act chastely. And I was a princess, expected to embody both.
His words made me wonder. Was he truly comfortable with my presence here? Not only was he grieving, but I was infringing on his freedom. “Then I am glad you know how to maintain happiness. Few have found such knowledge.”

Her mood seemed to fade and I let my smile wane to something, hopefully, more comforting and commiserating. "The road to near-happiness for myself," I replied. "But I don't expect it's the same path as that for others. In fact, some consider me a bit flippant in terms of my continued existence, climbing mountains and the like."

I laughed at that, his turn of phrase catching my fancy. “At least you shall go out with a happy heart, if you are being truly flippant.”

"I want to live- I just actually want to do some living as well. The safe path just seems to be skating by, and when I'm old I hope to actually have a few stories to tell." The apple I'd picked for myself was finished and I tossed the core to the gelding I'd left tied as a treat.

“Oh yes, it’s been terrible. Especially my monkey-like host.” I said, rolling my eyes dramatically. “I just can’t stand him. Now are we done, and I can stop lying through my teeth?” I asked with a grin.

"Yes, for now," I retorted, a jesting note to my expression as I leaned back slightly on my arms to relax casually.
