I walked into my bedroom that morning and saw it hanging there. I was a bit surprised to see a dress hanging in my room. A card was neatly pinned to the front of the gown, spiking my curiosity even more. Who would send me a dress? I hadn't asked Aleron to find me one, and no doubt he would have just told me if he's commissioned another.
Striding over I opened the card and scanned the few brief lines. It was signed from the Baron Durante, my soon to be consort. My body still hummed with the satisfaction I'd found in Keegan's arms, so the momentary flare of irritation at this boldness quickly faded. Instead I examined the dress.
It was fairly simple, if elegant in design, I didn't really have much to base it on. A black silk sheath, strapless, with only a slight flare of the skirts past the hips. I ran my fingers down a seam and felt something curious sewn into the lining. Upon closer inspection it was a dagger sheath, complete with slender blade. I pulled out the knife and admired the workmanship. My family crest was etched into the steel. Careful of the gown I re-sheathed the blade. My future husband was well informed. A slight frown tugged my lips. A cape with twin pins hung behind the dress. The material was stiffened and made a soft rustling noise as I touched it. Did it pin to the shoulders? Did he know about the scars? Unease flashed through me
Decisively I stripped my leathers, determined to try on this gift. With minimal fuss I had the gown on, and found that indeed the cape pinned to the gown at the shoulders, the broaches cleverly fashioned as blades. The dress fit me perfectly, the cape cleverly hid the most obvious of the scars. The only one visible was on my collarbone, an arrow wound that looked strangely like a crescent moon. I stared at my reflection and wondered, not for the first time, what had I gotten myself into with this rash scheme?
I left the dress hanging in the back of my closet, clad once again in the familiar feel of cambric and leather. The last line of the note kept echoing in my head.
"Please humor me by wearing this gift, you'll know me by my midnight attire, and with you resplendent and armed, I'll be sure to find you."
