The air was fresh and clean, not holding the dull musk of horse manure and sweat; I attributed that to walking instead of riding in the carriage. My deep breath shallowed as Tabien spoke, selling himself short. "I wouldn't bring you home if I felt like hiding you away," I said matter-of-factly, looking up at him sincerely. "And in all good honesty, I wouldn't have gone home with you if I did indeed feel that way."
I looked forward again, my hand giving his a reassuring squeeze.

I closed my eyes a moment and smiled. "Good, though now I won't get to show you my rather skillful hiding techniques. Ah well," I sighed. "In truth, that's a good thing, I believe, that ego won't intrude."

"No, you don't have to worry about my ego interfering," I reassured, stepping lightly past a muddy patch in the path. The sun warmed my back as we made our way, angling towards the Palace in the direction of my townhome. "Though now I'm curious at your hiding techniques. Can you resemble a tree?" My tone was teasing, wishing to lighten the mood again.

I chuckled, "Even better. If threatened, I can appear as innocolous as a hat rack. It's really quite amazing." I tried to keep myself from laughing to much at my little absurdity. "Though, I've found that the hatrack only works when I have a dark spot to be in."

"Oh, so you actually use the dark to hide," I teased in return, looking up at him. "How very clever."
The last was given with a serious face, but the tone of my voice and the twinkle of my eye gave way to the pure jest behind my words.

I looked at her for a moment, both of us walking in silence. Then I laughed genuinely. When I finished, I embraced her, bringing her closer to my side. "Don't tell anyone though, or you'll ruin my secret."
We walked some more without words, hearing the cobblestones echo under our footsteps.

The embrace caught me by surprise though I went with it, my smile blooming as I saw he understood the tease. "I promise, I'll remain quiet to your secrets," I responded, amused.
The quiet walk ate up the ground, and as I looked around, I recognized the houses along the way. "We're not too far now," I said. "Would you mind if we took my carriage to Mont Nuit? I like walking, but I'm not used to quite so much."

"Not at all." I said in a complacent tone. I wouldn't rather mind it myself. "I suppose it's too early for me to carry you anywhere, is it?" I said, winking at her from the side.

"A little bit," I responded, chuckling softly. Tabien seemed to be moving quickly, something I was unused to. Pointing, I made idle conversation as we walked, indicating towards a large townhome to our right that one could see through winter-bare tree limbs. "That home, there, belongs to the Comtesse de Marenzia. A very small, aged lady, but with a library that rivals my own." I smiled. "Would you like to see mine before we leave for the Parrot?"

"Hmm. I don't see why not. Perhaps you'll have something I'll take immediate interest in. I doubt you would have your books tossed carelessly around, would you." I whispered in her ear. "All neat and tidy?" I ended with another soft chuckle.

I shook my head. "Of course not," I said, glancing curiously up at him. "They're shelved alphabetically, by subject."

"By subject?" I thought abut it. "That's probably more convient than by author." We turned the corner, and I got a first view of the house. "Do you keep an equal collection of subject material, or do you tend to indulge in your favorites?"

"I try to keep it even," I said, smiling. We reached the gates of my families home and I spoke to the guard posted, then returned to Tabiens side to lead him in. "What about you? Are there any favorites you enjoy more than others?"

My hand itched idly at my sword hilt, wondering if i would be forced to remove it. "Well, I currently only have most of my favorites here with me. What might pass as a full library, partly my families, still lies back in Siovale." I nodded to the guards as I approached them.

As we walked, one of the guards stepped towards us, looking questioningly at me. I shook my head at him as I answered Tabien and he fell back again, closing the gate behind us and leaving the path clear. "Very understandable," I said as we moved, my hand habitually slipping through his arm. "What subject in particular do you favor?"

"What did I say last night, was it languages or philosophy." I asked both her and myself. I noted the guards tension as we passed, and I gave him as best I could a smile to put him at ease. I took a moment, taking in silently the air around. It was strange, I was a lord, but the divisions were still so very astounding. But, I remained calm, and tried not to oggle to much.

He flowed through my mistake without missing a beat, discretely pointing out that the subject had been covered without making me feel an idiot over it. Very diplomatic, though I had a feeling he did it out of pure niceness, not out of obligation to pad my ego. I smiled softly at him.
"Philosophy, if I remember correctly," I said, acknowledging that I'd momentarily forgotten. I glanced at him, noting the way he'd looked at the guards. "Don't worry," I said softly. "As long as you don't try to hurt me or kidnap me, nothing will happen... and I think if you'd wanted to do either of those, you would have by now." I grinned softly at him, trying to keep the mood light.

"Ah, that's right. I was torn, cause of that fun little game we played." I said, caressing her with reassurance. I listened as she noted the guards. "Don't worry, I would never think of doing such a thing."
Somewhere, in the back of my mind a small portion thought that thought might be entertaining, but almost as quickly, I shook my head, trying to dispel that image.
"Looks like this place is just coming into it's own," I said, remarking at the courtyard, which was just on the cusp of shedding winter's veil.

"You should see it when spring is in full bloom," I responded, my hand squeezing his arm softly. "As much as I love our country estate, I love this place as well; it's beautiful to me."
He'd been so nervous before at meeting me that I worried a little how he'd take meeting my brothers should one or two be around. Still, he'd relaxed with me, and I hoped he wouldn't be on edge.
Broaching the front steps, I paused on the porch and turned, leaning up and kissing him softly on his mouth.

She caught me off guard, and I only smiled after our lips parted. "With introductions like that, I definitly should." I took her hand in mind, unless she was afraid of a statement that might make. More pragmatically, it was that I don't get lost. I'm not afraid to admit myself that unknown houses worry me more than woods or deserts.

The smile that was on my mouth as we naturally drifted apart grew into a grin with his comment, and I laughed as I turned, my hand in his, to open the door.
Leading him into the house, I gestured gracefully. "Welcome to the de Somerville home," I said pleasantly, turning to look at him with a smile.

I put on a cordial face. "Thank you." Inside, I could already here in the background footsteps of busy staff. "So, a tour, or straight to your room. Perhaps a place to dumb me off polietly." I said, snickering teasingly.

I looked up at him, narrowing an eye a touch playfully. "Right, I nearly forgot about hiding you away; that's my style, after all." I glanced about, not seeing anyone outside of a young maid. She looked at Tabien and back at me, winking, and stifled a giggle as she disappeared through an open doorway.
Shaking my head a little, I glanced back at him. "Would you like a tour?" I asked. "Or, at the risk of you thinking I'm embarrassed of you again, would you prefer to head out to the Parrot as soon as possible?"

"I'm at your whim," I said with a shrug. I let the hand fall after the maid left, I guess I was expecting something more. "But I will admit, I do have a propencity to wander." I said slyly.

He was nervous... Or out of his element, or some combination that left him not quite the man he'd been in his own home. I chose for us, taking his hand back in mine, and drawing closer to his side. "Lets do both," I said softly, giving him a small, private smile meant for him alone. "I'd like to change my dress first though, if you wouldn't mind, so to my rooms?" The last was voiced as a question, set at enough angle that he could contest without it being awkward.

"Works for me." I leaned to whisper, "I'll try to contain myself," I said, seeing if i could make her blush. It was cute and I couldn't help myself. I just hoped I wouldn't do any damage.

"You better," I teased back as I began leading him towards my rooms, ready to strip myself of this dress. It felt wonderfully clean after Rene had pressed it, but I'd worn it the day before, and I was unused to wearing my clothing two days in a row. Lacing my fingers with Tabien, I began leading him up the stairs, taking them at an easy pace. No point in rushing. Glancing at him, I smiled. "Do you ever wish you had siblings?" I asked as we moved, quietly curious.

"I.." I started, though didn't finish, thinking about it at length. "It's hard to say. Off hand, I know I would not be the same if I had them. Perhaps I would know better ettiqute, better social skills if I had them, not to mention it would..." I thought about my jealous emotions I'd distilled from so long ago in Tiberium. "perhaps dull some of my aspirations. I guess the ultimate curious part of me would say yes. Could you say the same about a lack of siblings?"

I listened as he paused a few times, taking the time to think about his answer rather than readily giving one. It wasn't something I had to do; I knew mine as soon as he asked it. "Not at all," I said, shaking my head a little as we continued up the stairs. "I couldn't imagine my life without my brothers," I said, a reflective smile on my mouth. "Though I always wondered what it would be like to have a sister. Would you pick a sister or a brother, if you had the choice?"

"A sister." I thought a moment to make sure. "Yes, I think it would have brought some good balance. I fear a brother would have only made more competition in the house. I've noticed that lordships are harder to handle, and offspring more troublesome from an inheritance standpoint when their are very successively multiple heirs of...." I bit my tongue. "That was a little off topic I'm afraid."
We reached the top of the stairs, carpets and furnished in spring colors. I looked down the hall, guessing to myself which room was hers. If I was lucky, I would visit on many more occasion.
