I smiled softly to Juliette recounting the kiss we had shared. "I'm quite looking forward to the coronation fete though I think the ceremony itself with be dab and tedious." I chuckled looking to my sibblings.
"I assume you're all coming." I looked to Reese out of the corner of my eye curiously.

I saw the look Gratien threw me and mentally rolled my eyes. Yes, I was a black sheep, yes I had a shady reputation, blah, blah, blah. He expected me to be neck deep in a gambling ring or lost in some non-court brothel. Everyone knew I rarely went to the Night Court anymore. He didn't expect me to be there upholding the 'Family Name'.
"Of course. I don't think it'll be nearly as dull as you predict, brother. Two venues bursting with the cream of D'Angeline society? I'm sure it will be most pleasurable." I couldn't keep the innuendo out of the last word. After all, it was expected.

"I am," I said, looking at Gratien, "though I do not think it will be as dull as you predict. Sabrina is young and new, I think she will bring a breath of fresh air to old ceremonies."

Gratien's eyes caught mine, and it was all I could do not to blush, memories of the night seared into my mind. I studied my plate as Reese and Pierre spoke, then responded. "Well, against fetes, cermonies such as the coronation always seem tedious. I'm sure we'd all much rather be dancing and carrying on." I wasn't about to define the last with Reese in the room. I knew better.

I saw the way Juliette looked at Gratien. And for the first time, I saw Gratien notice, and look back at Juliette. When in the seven Hells had that happened? Juliette had pined for Gratien since we were children, and he was cheerfully oblivious.
I focused on Juliette, critically appraising her. She wasn't stunning, was only passing fair by D'Angeline standards. Nothing was truly remarkable about her. Well, maybe the softness of her hair. And her lips would be imminently kissable, if she smiled more...
Kissing? Since when did you kiss women Reese?
Saffryn...
"Oh yes, Jules, a fete is a perfect time to 'carry on' with the marks picked out from the ceremony. Half the realm will have picked out their partners at the ceremony, and use the fete as an excuse to 'carry on'." I said drolly, a suggestive smirk on my face. Inside I was irritated. I shouldn't be thinking about Saffryn. Or kissing.

Reese had a strange look about him and I narrowed my eyes slightly at his talk. "Perhaps we can discuss something less lascivious." I said looking to Reese. "We can discuss sex after we've done politics and religion." I said looking to Julie and winked.

I am not going to turn red. I am not going to turn red. It's only Reese, and he always does this.
"If you call me Jules, does that mean I get to call you Maurice?" I asked instead of answering his smug smile. I then looked back to Gratien. "Did you have something particular in mind?"

"Tell me about your plans for the spring." I said trying to ignore Reese's rudness.

I took a bite before answering. "Well, I'd like to go home for a little bit, after the coronation, but I'll see how things go. I think my mother will only be happy if she can exile me here for a year without returning. Not that I'm complaining of course." I smiled.

Ugh! How I detested being called Maurice. At least the mouse had some spunk to her. How many times had I reduced her to blushing speechlessness when we were children?
I decided to keep my mouth shut for a bit, instead concentrating on eating my share of the excellent food. I had some business dealings to attend after this tedious affair anyway, so best to get it over with. And get away from the oh so familiar censure.

I bit my lip to keep from laughing as Juliette set Maurice back into his place. "Your mother is well then, I take it?"

I was amazed it worked. I hadn't ever been able to defect Reese twice in a single a single week, much less a single day. Ever.
I looked at Pierre as he spoke, seeing the amusement on his face. "She seems fine. She's been kept busy since I moved to the City, and she likes it that way." Less time to think, less time to grieve.
