This time it was my turn to sigh; I didn't understand the point of this debate, or conversation, or instruction, or however it was to be labeled. It wasn't doing anything but making my spine a little straighter; everything he said I knew already. "As much as I can," I said dryly. "After all, I am a noble."
The server came up at that point, her demeanor small and quiet; likely she'd heard a little of it and wanted to stay out of it as much as she could. I gave her my order as she collected the menus, then sat in silence and took a drink of my wine, letting Tabien order his.

I saw that look, how could I not. "My forgiveness. I suppose that is somewhat offensive at any level. I base my opinions on a myriad of very strange coincidences, that I've had to deal with."
I turned to the waiter, giving her my order pleasently, and looked back with a more hopefull expression. "So, how good is your riding."

"I asked you not to lie to me, so I won't lie to you and say it wasn't offensive at all, because some pieces were. Just remember, Tabien, when things go sour with economics, relations, anything related to a big picture, it's not the farmers and laborers who get blamed. It's the person who is in charge. One can't expect them to know every trade, every in and out of it, the people who work it, why they do, what all it accomplishes and how many are involved in it. Should they keep relations? Most definitely, and all that are true to their title and inheritance do. But to expect them to be humble in the face of such responsibility... It's difficult." I looked at him quietly for a moment, my eyes unabashedly taking his in. "I've never disrespected anyone who was honest, no matter their station, appearance or last name. I would hope I could garner the same from at least most people; to want it all would be futile."
I clasped my hands in my lap, responding to his change of subject and pleasant nature with a ginger smile of my own. "My riding is good enough that I don't fall off. You said you enjoy it as well - do you have a preference to mare, gelding or stallion for a mount?"

The flurry of words hit me. I could think of nothing to retaliate, and sat for a moment, humbled by this womens response.
As I thought, I dug my own grave.
"Mare's myself," I said pleasently.
This women was something, one minute a fiery defense of her lordship, and quickly she redoubled her expression, like we'd been discussing husbandry for the past half hour.

Oh, well damn. I overwhelmed him. For all the reading I've done, I should have probably spent some more time in the etiquette section, because it was blaringly obvious that I errored. That's not to say, however, that I didn't mean all that I had spoken.
"Tabien," I said after a moment, letting his name hang as I gathered my thoughts. "Please, don't take this the wrong way, but don't feel like you have to play word games with me, skirt around your opinions to save my ego. But if you are going to give your opinion, just remember that I have one too, and I'll tell you what I think just as much as you will to me." I gave him a smile, picking up the bottle of wine as a gesture of truce, offering to pour him more. "You never know, though - the next time we might actually agree."

"Spoken like a true scholar." I chuckled, then let out a laugh. "Ah, it's just like the temple, being scolded by the elders. I haven't been beaten at my own game in some time. It's nice to be reminded that your not the sharpest tool in the shed sometimes."
I let her fill my glass.

"Ah, well," I said, my smile taking on a little more of a tease, "You see? Not all of us are only concerned with fetes and goofing off all day." I wrinkled my nose a little bit at him, filling hi glass to its initial height once more before putting the bottle back down. I paused, then looked at him curiously. "Did this spurn off of my comment about wishing my wardrobe were bigger?"

He didn't answer my question, but there was no point in revisiting any of it and wringing everything out once again. "You're right, I am lucky," I said with a teasing smile, feeling the air around us relax a little more.
"So, do you have a mare you ride, then? I have a bit of a soft spot for horses, seeing as I enjoy riding and all."

"Just Furion, my trusty mount. We've been through alot, and he past his prime, but he's a great horse. Sometimes I swear he reads my mind." I took a sip, giving the wine a good taste.
"I remember one time, I nearly got my ass knocked off, and Furion was smart enough to duck for, isn't that something."

"That's the funny thing about horses," I said with a slow, teasing smile. "They generally know what they can fit through. It's the riders on their backs that run into trouble."
My smile grew more, and I could almost feel a twinkle enter my eye. "He sounds like a lovely mount, though. You're lucky."

"Thank you." I said. Whether how sincere she was didn't matter at all. "How about you, any favorite companions?"

"Actually, I do, but she's at our country estate. A chestnut piebald with a disposition as sweet as honey." I smiled, taking another sip of wine. "I couldn't bear to bring her to the City and away from the fields, so there she remains."

"And where might that estate be." I asked, curiously. "North in Naamare," I started...."east to Camalach, or...."

I laughed, hoping and trying to keep things light between us. I very much disliked uncomfortable situations. "It's hard to keep everyones country estates separate, don't worry. I mess up from time to time too, and it's been part of my upbringing since birth."

I nodded. "I must admit, it must be nice to have 'home' relatively close. You must be only a days ride from the city, correct?"
I began to think about Siovale then, I promised I wouldn't go back till I made some sort of progress, but I let that goal be vague.

"It is quite nice, actually, but I don't get much of a chance to see the countryside unless I opt to do a bit of traveling." I smiled, sitting back a little as the food arrived.
The server refilled both our glasses, then replaced the wine in the bucket before discretely leaving once more. "What province do you hale from? Or are you City born and bred?" I picked up my fork, waiting for his answer before I began eating.

"No, this is my longest stay in the city so far ever. I was born in Siovale, near the northern border. Shemhazi's kin I am." I chuckled lightheartedly.
Not the other.

I smiled a little warmer, taking the first bite of my salad. I chewed thoughtfully, then washed it down with a sip of wine. "A good Companion to be related to if any," I said. "In no way do I mean to disdain Kushiel, but I can't say I relish pain and humiliation in my love, physical or otherwise."

"I imagine it's a very ecletic taste, but I would agree," I said coolly.
At least, I think that maybe more of a hope than a thought. Cheering up, I responded "So, have you been there before. I would think someone with your aptitude would do well there."

I glanced at him, not sure if he were trying to flatter and charm me or if it was just how he was. Either way, it worked. "Once a long time ago, but sadly I was unable to stay for very long. I'd love to go back, though, mayhap swim in the ocean. Were you able to do that much in your youth?"

"Of course. I'm afraid my parents didn't see much of me during my childhood," More true in some ways. "I'd stay out for hours, nigh the whole day, exploring the wilderness. Climbing, swimming in the lake, all were excellent times."

I smiled, thinking of another who was as much an avid outdoors man as Tabien at least used to be. Where Tabien was one of forests and oceans, Landis was one of mountains, and both made me itch to see more of Terre d'Ange.
"That sounds fabulous." I paused midway to taking a second bite, listening to him. "Do you miss your childhood home? I imagine with all your travels you haven't had much time to be there."

"In a way yes. Though, I doubt they would offer the same challenges as they once did. I've seen far harsher climates. But truthfully," I took a sip of wine, and readied my fork, "I should visit them sometime. "

Next time? I chuckled a moment at the thought. "Well, that would assume I would see you again, now wouldn't it. Not to mention that I would be just as happy eating the market sellers meals as well as this cuisine.
