The nightmare is always the same. Intense, that sense of impending danger, the need to escape.
It is dark. He lies on the bed, a phantom figure, convulsing erratically, contaminated with some deadly sickness. But he's close to me, he's someone important. I can't just abandon him. I lean over the bed, my hand reaching out to brush the dark hair from his face, but I'm pulled back immediately before I can see.
"My lady, we must go. We must leave him here."
"No!"
I struggle against my captor, reaching forward, but there is a heavy blow against the back of my head, and everything sharply becomes black.
I opened my eyes.
Always, at that crucial moment before I can see his face, I'd wake up. It's strange, how my dreams seemed more vivid to me than when conscious.
I looked out the window, it was early morning, the sun just barely winking over the horizon. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and tried to calm my breathing. It was just a dream, always the same dream, but just a dream nevertheless.
There was a knock at the door. "Cass? Cass are you all right?"
"I'm fine." I slipped on a cloak and opened the door. Marat was waiting just beyond, a scowl on his face.
"You were screaming again," he said, folding his arms across his chest. "The nightmare?"
"The very same." I gave a half hearted smile. "It's nothing, really, I'm all right now."
Marat's eyes narrowed. "Did you take the infusion last night?"
I blushed like a chastised child. "No, I didn't.
"Thought not," he replied wryly. He produced a stoppered bottle from his pocket. "You know what Florence would say. You should remember to take it, he's only got your best interests at heart."
"I know," I sighed, taking the vial from him. "Thank you, Marat. I just need a minute."
He left with a curt nod and I closed the door behind him. Then, removing the stopper, I downed the sweet liquid in one go. After a few moments I could feel myself becoming more relaxed, the world softening around the edges; the nightmare fading away as the infusion took effect. It was hard to believe that I could have dreamed up such a thing, when just beyond the window was the peacefulness of Siovale.
I slowly got dressed in my grey robes and headed towards the temple proper. I offered up a bowl of incense before the gilded statue of Shemhazai, a sense of peace overwhelming me as it moved, all trace of the nightmare disappearing as I murmured a prayer and then went about my duties.
