The sun was bright and the sky seemed almost completely clear and I was sitting on the back of one of the geldings that lived in the stables at the townhouse Victoire and I lived in. Waking up that day I'd realized that it had been entirely too long since I'd gone riding, and I remembered that I'd promised Eric that we'd go riding and hadn't been able to keep that promise with everything else that was going on. Now I could fix that though.
It was probably rude of me but I hadn't sent a message ahead, instead riding up to the house that Eric was serving in and leaving my horse at the stables before I headed to the door. Everything here was beautiful and I was almost in awe of it as I went to the side door I'd been directed to and knocked, hoping that he was there and not too busy. I needed a friend to talk to, one I could trust to be impartial and nice at the same time, and while I didn't want to burden him I hoped he'd be able to tell me a little bit more about how things worked here in the City.

I was sitting in my room at the time, jotting down a letter to Chloe. We had started writing each other, almost daily and I looked forward to receiving another message from her.
Meanwhile downstairs one of the servants was answering the door. She seemed to recognize the princess almost at once and her jaw dropped a little, as did her knees as she curtseyed. "Good day, your highness. May I help you with something?"

The servant who opened the door seemed to recognize me and I gave her a bright smile and a nod as she curtsied so that she wouldn't have to stay in that position for too long. I wasn't here for anything formal and it seemed wrong to require too much respect, especially if it was just because of my name. "Good day to you too," I replied in a cheerful tone. "I was actually wondering if I could speak to Eric Lamont, is he busy?" If he was out or occupied or something that was fine, I'd have no problem waiting for another time to drag him out and it probably was rude of me to drop by unannounced.

The servant looked a little surprised to say the least She nodded though. "I will go and see." She turns and trots away quickly, saying something about a princess calling on a messenger boy, and the state of society.
Upstairs I was putting the finishing touches on the letter when I heard a knock. "Com'n." It was Elise and she had an odd expression on her face. "Something wrong?"
"Oh no," she replied, "Just someone here to see you."
I shrugged and set the letter down. The only people I could think of were Josette or Noemi.
I came down the stairs and went to the door, surprised, though I didn't need to be, at the sight of Noemi. I smiled and, forgetting all etiquette, gave her a hug, long and full of friendly affection.

The day was lovely and I settled my hat more securely on my head while I waited, letting the beauty of the surroundings sink in completely. When Eric came into sight he seemed shocked but happy and I smiled brightly as I hugged him back, laying a quick, friendly kiss on his cheek. "Well, I'm glad to see you too," I told him in a warmly playful tone. "You look like you're doing well and happy on top of it. Do you have any free time? I know we were supposed to have gone riding already but with everything going on I couldn't get away for awhile."
That was a little bit of an understatement but I was sure he'd heard about everything that had happened. The death of Queen Sabrina, Christien's continued coma, the upcoming wedding of Coretta and Cygnus's return as well as Victoire's absence and depression had kept me a little more busy, and while I knew it was necessary it also wasn't always fun. "so, do you want to go? I brought a horse over here but if you want to borrow one from the stables at my house I don't mind."

"Yeah, like usual I really just live here until Lessandrie returns. I'd love to go for a ride. Are we picnicking too or is that for another time?" I said, inclining my head just slightly, smile still on my face.

"I was going to pick up the picnic things on the way since I wasn't sure whether or not you'd be able to come and it seemed wrong to waste anything," I replied with a smile, making sure my hat was still on securely after the enthusiastic hug. "Do you need to finish up anything? What have you been doing with everything that's going on?"

"Well I was working on a letter, but I can finish it on the way back. I should grab my hat though." I think it must have been my recent communication with Chloe, but most of the shyness and quietes from my was gone in that moment and I was simply happy and not afraid to show it. "Not much. There has been a lot of thinking I suppose." I keyed down my tone then, but not for long.

There was a certain confidence to Eric now that was refreshing to see and I wondered at it, and the curiosity grew when his tone dipped down again to something more like it had been when we'd first met. "Thinking about something bad or something good?" I asked gently. "And I'll wait here while you get your hat if you want."

"Just thinking," I said, smiling once more. "I'll be right back then!" I raced up the stairs, grabbed the hat that Noemi herself had picked out for me, and raced down the stairs in hardly a minute. "Alright then, shall er be off?"

Something about the way my question made him respond caused me to wonder if he was hiding something but I wasn't the kind to pry and almost in the next breath he was going to fetch his hat. While I waited my own thoughts turned a bit, going over a little bit of everything that had taken place, and when he returned I gave my friend another smile. "I'm ready when you are, my good sir, and it seems that you are indeed ready so let's be off!" I said eagerly, laughing a bit at my own enthusiasm.

"Alright then. Shall we go to the stables and get everything ready?" I inquired already taking a few steps in that direction. I wasn't certain if she had a horse saddles already or not.

"My horse is ready, I rode it over here from my house, but he's at the stables too," I said as I followed him toward the stables. "You know, you really do seem a little different somehow, but in a good way. There's less blushing involved anyway." The last was a light jest and I hoped that he wouldn't take offense to it. "And I was just starting to learn what it all meant too."

I laughed. A slight bit of pink appeared in my cheek, but it was barely noticeable. "Maybe the Alyssum in me has finally packed up and started to move out?" I followed close beside her as we walked towards the stables. "At least, he dosen't bug me nearly so much.

"I didn't know it was bugging you at all," I replied in a little bit of surprise, though my smile stayed in place and I matched my pace to his so we could walk next to each other and speak a little more easily. "But so long as you're comfortable and happy that's what matters the most to me, my friend."

I smiled. "Thank you very much. I think the main thing is that I don't want to be associated with it anymore. I want to find who I really am. And I don't know if that was it or not."

"That makes perfect sense to me," I told him in a completely confident tone, because it really did. After all I was the princess who went out without always giving my last name to see if people treated me any differently for not knowing who I was. Would things with Eric have been different if he hadn't known about my standing? It didn't really matter though, since he was still a good friend and probably the only person I felt really comfortable talking to about most things here in the City. "Sometimes people assume what you should be based on a name or a habit. There are some people who think that because I'm always trying to see the bright side of things that I'm stupid, or that I don't care about anything at all, which isn't true. You should be whatever you want to be."

I smiled, partly in thanks and partly in amusement. "Thank you, Noemi. I guess now it's just a matter of time to see what that person is."
We arrived at the stables and I opened the door. I noticed Noemi's horse right away before going over to the one I'd be using, a gentle bay. "Do we know where we want to ride to?"

"I don't know anywhere around here but I've heard that the area just outside the City walls is really nice," I replied as I walked over to my dappled brown and white gelding and took his reins gently. "If you want to, I mean. I know a lot of people are nervous about doing that these days because of everything that's happened."

I began to saddle the horse as she spoke, considering what she said. "Well, I'm not overly worried, so long as we don't go too far or stray into the woods. It's up to you of course."
My horse was quickly saddled and I walked over to Noemi.

"I don't think I'm planning on running away quite yet, there's too much here I still have to do," I told him with a small smile as he saddled the horse he was going to ride and I waited for him, trying not to sink into my own thoughts too much. Somehow it was starting to seem like anything I said inside of the City walls was going to come back to haunt me, so maybe once we were outside of the walls it would be easier to speak freely. Once Eric was back beside me I gave him a wider grin, pushing away the things that were on my mind, and started to lead my horse out of the stables. "Are you sure there's nothing else on your mind- or do you just not want to talk about it?"

I shrugged. "There might be. But I'd rather wait til we've had a chance to ride first, if that's alright with you." It would probably be a good thing to talk about Chloe.
I led the horse outside and carefully mounted him, waiting for Noemi to do the same before we began a light walk.

"That sounds fine," I replied as I stepped up into my saddle, settling myself easily there and patting my horse's neck as I started him back toward the street again. He wasn't the most docile horse in the stable but I liked his steady strength and he was trained enough that I wasn't worried about him running off as long as he was treated well. "What should we pick up to eat?"

"Some sandwiches?" I suggested as we started towards the gate? "We might go to the bakery too and pick up a couple pastries. Is there anything you had in mind?"

"Maybe some fruit too, that might be nice if we can find some," I replied after a moment of thought, giving Eric a quick smile. "But I'm not sure what's ripe here yet."

The gatekeeper opened up the metal bars and let us out. I took a quick glance back before responding. "Very little, I'm afraid. There might be some berries though."

"Berries are good though," I said with a smile, moving my horse a bit closer to his once we were past the gate and gently nudging his shoulder. "So sandwiches and pastries and berries- did you want to get wine? I haven't really be drinking it lately." I looked down and sideways at that, knowing it probably sounded silly- and it probably was. It didn't mean I was going to drink it, but I wouldn't begrudge Eric if he wanted to.

I smiled. "Sure wine would be good." I never drank very much, but today would be a day to relax. I glanced over at her and smirked. "Now you're the one who looks embarrassed."

Laughing lightly I looked back at him and shook my head. "I'm not really embarrassed, I just know I probably sound a little bit silly. I haven't really had any wine to drink since the Queen and the Dauphin were poisoned and I'm not exactly sure why the idea makes me so leery. That's pretty dumb, isn't it?"

I shook my head. "It's not silly at all, in fact I completely understand. But if we buy it right from the bottle I think we can be sure it's safe now can't we?"
