Early autumn, year one of Queen Sabrina's reign
I had proposed to Lessa the night before, and blessed be all the gods above, she had said yes. But it hadn't been planned, and so I hadn't had her ring. I was here today to fix that. I bounced up the steps to her front door, my chest feeling light and my heart feeling full as I knocked on the door.

Somehow I'd known that I should expect a knock at the door today, so I'd dressed very finely and waited with bated breath for just that to happen. There was work I could be doing, and a painting I could probably finish but I simply couldn't take the chance of being away from the door when Fydor came by. A book sat in my lap and I reclined against a window with the package on a nearby table. Inside was a silver locket, thick and round and more masculine than most, with a thick silver chain; the interior of the locket itself was painted with a miniature I'd done of myself and a lock of hair. Hopefully he would like it.
When the knock finally came I was standing before I quite realized it and smoothing my skirts as I walked to answer it. My hair was curling slightly around my shoulders and hung loose and the dress I'd chosen was a light cream color with embroidery in bronze thread. Taking a deep breath reached out and turned the doorknob, pulling it open smoothly and silently, and then just stood there looking at him for a moment. He was always so handsome and my heart throbbed in my chest for love of him. "Good afternoon," I told him quietly as I smiled, then stepped aside so he could come in.
I really wanted to just wrap my arms around him, but I knew that it could wait. He would be unhappy if I didn't consider appearances.

"Good afternoon," I said with a huge grin as the door closed behind me. As soon as the outside world was sealed off, I put my arms around her and kissed her softly. "I missed you," I whispered against her lips. We had spoken of many things the night before, and I was determined to make her as happy as I could. Besides, we were engaged now, so kissing in front of the staff no longer seemed like such a bad thing.

He seemed as happy to see me as I was happy to see him and I returned the embrace and let myself relax into his his arms. The sweet touch of his lips was somehow more open than it had been before, as if he were less afraid to hold back behind closed doors and I was even happier for it as I kissed him back with a smile on my face.
"I always miss you," I replied just as softly as he'd spoken, leaning against him lightly and feeling all of the tension I'd had for the rest of the morning melt away. "I'm glad you're here now though, thank you for coming. Did you have a good night after you left?" I knew we'd have to move eventually but for now I felt far too comfortable to suggest it, even if we were still standing.

"It was good. I sleeped very well, knowing you said yes," I said with a grin. I picked her up easily in my arms with a chuckle and then walked us to her sitting room, sitting down on a chaise with her in my lap. "You make me a very happy man my Lessa." Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out a velvet bag and presented it to her. "Here, I am sorry that I did not have it last night." Inside, carefully wrapped up, was her engagement ring.

I knew it probably wasn't the most dignified thing in the world but I liked it when he carried me, and I felt secure and safe and loved. It wasn't something I was accustomed to but I loved it nevertheless, as much as I loved him, and I leaned my head against his shoulder, my forehead near his neck, and inhaled his scent again. There was no way I could know what exactly he smelled like, but I wanted to remember it. "I'm happy you asked so I could say yes," I replied softly.
Once we were seated I continued to lean against him carefully, still smiling and feeling very softly affectionate, and I truly thought that if he came for this reason alone then I would be content. Then he handed me the bag and it didn't take a genious to know what he probably meant, and my eyes went wide as I held it, then started on the ties of it with slightly shaking hands. Once the bag was open I pulled out the wrappings and opened them as delicately as I could. There lay my ring. My engagement ring.
For a moment I could only stare at it with a sense of shock, and then I ran a finger lightly over it as though it may disappear like a rainbow. It was there, metal and diamond and opal, and beautiful, and my hands shook even more as I looked at Fydor. "It's perfect, and wonderful, and I love you so much. Will you put it on me? I'm afraid I'll drop it."

Her reaction was perfect, her eyes wide and her finger caressing the wavy lines of metal. "I love you too solnshyshko," I replied with a more than happy smile. I picked the ring up carefully, and with just as much care, I slid it onto her finger.

I'd been happy before in my life, I was sure of it, but all of it paled away to a shade of grey compared to how I felt at this moment. His hands were warm on mine and the cool metal was a sharp contrast as it slipped into place on my left hand to shine against my pale skin. One day I would be married to Fydor, someone who loved me and wanted to see me well, who was entirely more handsome and charming and sweet than I deserved.
All of the sudden it all seemed to overflow and a tear ran down my cheek as I wrapped my arms back around Fydor's neck again and buried my head against his neck. I was happy, so much so that I didn't even understand how to explain the scope of it. "Thank you so much," was all I could manage to say for the moment, my words muffled against his skin.

Her face was suddenly pressed against my neck, and I nearly thought something was wrong. But her words explained the wetness as tears of happiness, and I kissed the top of her head. "You are welcome. You make me very happy my Lessa," I whispered, wrapping my arms even tighter around her. It still amazed me, I had a fiancee. The most beautiful and sweet and demure and caring and... The list was so long. And she was promised to be mine.

As he spoke I was still trying to catch my breath and keep myself from tearing up anymore but I felt his arms wrap more tightly around me and I hugged him as close as I dared. That actually helped and I felt my body relax a bit more from the sheer rush of affection and love that had so baffled me earlier. Now I understood it and I could find other ways to express the extent of what I was feeling.
Smiling again I sat up and wiped the tears delicately away from my eyes with a light laugh. "I'm sorry," I told him in a happy tone, then lay a soft kiss on his cheek. "I didn't expect to react that way and I really am very, very happy. I have something for you too, should I get it now or can we stay like this for a little while longer?" I truly didn't mind either way, I just wanted to give him the choice.

"Get it now, and then you can sit on my legs again," I said with a grin, my heart so full right now. Even with tears staining her cheeks she was so incredibly beautiful to me.

I was glad to see that I hadn't upset him with my sudden outburst and the smile that stayed on his face made me feel more calm than I had since before my mother died. Any of the fearful desperation I'd held about him, that he was playing some sort of elaborate game with everything I held dear and my own heart as the stakes had dissolved; somehow this moment had done that, and the ring on my finger was like a compass for my heart.
Still smiling and trying to wipe away the last remnants of tears from my cheeks I stood up and walked over to the window seat I'd been in before his arrival and picked up the small, wrapped package. There was always the chance he wouldn't like it, but I wasn't going to think about that now. I felt carefree for the moment, sure that the world was running exactly perfectly and when I came back to Fydor I sat down where I'd been before and offered him the gift. "I hope you like it."

"It is from you. I love already," I said with a smile, one arm around her as I unwrapped the small parcel carefully. Despite my care, thick silver chain spilled from my hands and onto her skirts, and I was left with a locket in my hand. I opened it carefully to find her smile reflected in a painting, a lock of her hair caught on the opposite side. "It is perfect," I said, looking up at her. "Did you make this? It is wonderful, I will wear always."

"Well, I painted the picture," I said with a light flush as I got comfortable against him again, a hand coming up to stroke his hair as the other picked up the dropped chain and set it carefully with the rest of the packaging. "I'm glad you like it. I had to wait for the paint to finish setting before I could give it to you." I'm not sure it held as much meaning as an engagement ring but if he wore it forever I wouldn't mind at all.
Smiling sweetly I leaned up and brushed a light kiss against his lips, then pulled away the smallest bit to look at him from beneath my lashes. By now I thought he wouldn't think me too forward for taking that small liberty. "Do you have anything else to do today? Can you stay for a little while and have lunch, or go on a walk?" These were small things, and most of the others at court would have thought it funny to hear those suggestions but that was what I was used to.

"I can stay," I replied with a smile. I had errands that I should have been doing, but they could wait. She was the most important thing to me now. "Will you help with the necklace? To put on?"

All I could do to his question was nod and I picked up the chain and the locket, sliding the pendant back onto the silver links until it was in the center. For a moment I simply looked at him, my fiance and my love, and then I held an end of the chain in each hand and leaned closer to fasten them at the back of his neck, lay a light kiss on his shoulder and sat back down to look at him again. My handsome Fydor, really and truly mine.
"So, what would you like to do then?" I asked after a moment. "Anything you want, as long as it makes you happy."

She looked at me with the oddest look on her face, but then she leaned in to put my new necklace on me, and I inhaled her scent. Laima, how did she always smell so good? "I think a walk sounds nice. The sky is good today," I replied, a finger reaching up to caress her cheek lightly.

His touch on my cheek was sweet and I leaned into it just a bit, my cheeks flushed with pleasure at the simple contact and the way his eyes looked into mine. "I think you're right," I said softly, bringing my hand up to stroke his cheek as he did mine. Perhaps this was torment, being so close and it still not being enough to fully express what lay in my heart, but I could endure it for the sake of him. A light smile crossed my face and I laughed a bit in sheer joy. "I suppose that means I'm going to have to get up, but this is very comfortable." A small, innocent tease, a light jest- would he accept it? I had to try anyway, if only to learn that about him.

"It is difficult to walk when feet are not on ground," I agreed with a smile. My hand went to hers, looking at how the ring lay around her finger. I kissed the back of her hand, and then the corner of her mouth before standing and carefully setting her down. "There, easy now?" I asked, teasing her back.

His kisses were sweet and I flushed in pleasure at them, and then laughed gaily as I was picked up again and set on the floor. "Yes, I think this does make it easier," I replied in an equally teasing tone as I took his hand and squeezed it gently for the simple feel of it. I liked his hands, they were strong and somehow safe-seeming, and I took our clasped hands and rubbed the back of his against my cheek for a moment before I relaxed them again. "Now I'm ready to go on a walk. Do you just want to go to the gardens or would you rather look around the house? I haven't had a chance to show you that yet and now it'll be your home someday too."

His agreement emboldened me a little and I smiled widely. "After that we'll take advantage of the nice weather and have lunch in the garden," I promised, hoping he'd be amicable to the situation. The estate was pretty large so it might take a little while to see even the places of the most importance.
I lightly brushed my thumb against his hand and then started to walk, leading him toward the main foyer which everything else in the house branched off from. "What should we start with?" I asked him, my eyes sparkling a bit in merriment. "Downstairs is the kitchens and the main study, and upstairs is the bedrooms, my suite and the solar where I paint."

"That sounds like a good plan," I told him and started toward the stairs, my hand still lightly on his and feeling very full of affection for him. "A solar is a room that's very open to the sun and lets in a lot of light. A lot of ladies use them for sewing rooms or nurseries but since I don't need it for that yet I use it to paint." A light flush came to my cheeks as I realized part of what I said but I continued anyway. "It gives me enough light that I can see the colors I'm using and the details."

It didn't surprise me that he'd latched onto that particular word; if you didn't understand the context it could sound confusing or even- Elua forbid he thought the last thing that came to mind when I ran the words back through my head. "Isn't that something that you would help me to decide?" I replied instead, looking at him through the corners of my eyes as we reached the top landing, my expression open and a bit of the flush still on my cheeks. "Since we'll be married, and that means having a family, doesn't it?"

"I will like to have family with you very much," I replied earnestly. I had only been teasing her, but this was as good of a time as any to have this conversation. I knew that I wanted many children, but I also knew that she could well have other ideas. "What family do you be dreaming?"

The question he asked me wasn't an easy one and I opened the door to the solar still thinking as I led him inside. This was the room where I did all of my painting, and two of the walls were paned with expensive glass windows to let in the most light possible. The paintings themselves were on easels or hanging on the walls with some in large canvas sleeves to protect them from being chipped or ripped.
"I don't know any kind of family but my own, and that's very small by most people's standards," I told him softly as I walked toward one of the stone walls in the room, on which hung portraits I'd done of my mother, father and younger brother as I remembered them. "But I think the best kind of family is determined by love. I'd love to have as many children as I can love and care for and teach, and hopefully when that times comes I'll know exactly what that means." I gave him a sideways glance and and smile, still somewhat flushed. "What about you?"

"I like my big family. But maybe we do not need seven children," I said, looking at her with a smile. "Seven is a lot. Maybe too much a lot. Maybe four is good a lot? I am only thinking in speech," I added hurriedly, not wanting to pressure her.
I looked around then, taking in the room. "Beautiful. Did you make these?"

It was clear that he was worried about getting my true feelings on the matter and I smiled at his sweetness, knowing from speaking with others that it wasn't often the case in some places. Large families meant more heirs, and less chance of some events wiping out a family line, but in my family the concern had always been having just enough to prevent any conflicts of inheritance. Seven was a bit of an intimidating number considering we hadn't even been together yet, but four- it was a round figure, and felt even. "I could try," I nearly whispered with a wide smile, glad I had someone who was willing to hear my opinion on such matters. "If Eisheth is kind."
Looking at the pictures around the room I felt a little steadier and I nodded. "I painted all of them, and other things," I told him, knowing that they probably weren't the finest pieces of art in the world but able to appreciate them for what they represented. With a fainter smile that held a little wistful happiness I gestured to the ones of my family. "That's my mother, and my father, and my little brother Laurel."
