Ah, gods, it felt good to be home. Not just another stop, more friends, but home. Unannounced, unexpected, I didn't bother writing ahead to warn Abby, wanting instead to see how things were instead. Leaving Denis, watching him pull away brought emotions forth, emotions I still didn't want to admit to myself. Gods be damned, I loved that man, loved his zeal and his wit, loved how perfect he was in body and how cunning he was in mind. He took what I had and twisted it back around on me, forcing me no other choice but to admit defeat. He was my equal, something I'd never thought I would find.
The townhome wasn't much changed. Still impeccably kept, still smelling as I remembered it. If there were a few more girly things around than I remembered, well, it was Abbys home too, and as long as she didn't try changing everything I wouldn't make any qualms. A quick inquiery to a surprised maids face told me that my sister was not at home; my brows rose at that. Where else would she be? For all we were sisters, we were nothing alike, not like I'd always hoped for growing up. Giving a curt order to have my luggage unpacked and thoroughly cleaned and a hot bath ran, I made my way up the stairs and to the master suites, my fingers holding my skirts up out of my way.
My rooms, at least, were completely unchanged. Still spotless, bedsheets turned down with the look of having recently been changed; either someone had slept here, which I'd be infuriated over, or the maids stripped them weekly still in the case I returned; that was far more likely, with guest rooms available.
Mollified, I stripped myself out of my dress and removed my jewelry, taking out my hair net, everything off my body. My ebony hair tumbled down around my waist, dark and luscious, my crowning glory that shimmered as the light caught it, and longer than it was when I was here last. Since Augusts funeral Denis and I had traveled, I to be with him after his cousins death, and a few weeks turned into more, and more.. Neither of us had anticipated being gone this long. Running my fingers through my hair, I ventured into my closet with a happy sigh, looking over my unworn dresses.
Elua I was happy to be home.
A new dress chosen for dinner with Denis tonight, I laid it upon the bed and ventured into the adjacent bathing room, pleased at finding the last maid filling the tub. Her eyes widened at my blatant nakedness, but I paid her no attention as I saw to the oils myself, adding them with a deft finger. I wanted to be soft and pretty, the scent of spice clinging gently to my skin. Informing her I'd require my hair being done after the bath was over, she nodded and made a hasty retreat, and I lowered myself into the bath.
Close to an hour later, I was finally done. The bath had chilled, and I was scrubbed thoroughly, my hands and feet soft, every pore of my body ripe, clean. Extracting myself from the bath, I wrapped a thick robe around me and walked back into the room, pleased at finding the maid waiting for me.
"I want something... loose. Seductive. I've worn my hair up far too much these past few months."
Breathing softly, she nodded, bidding me a timid welcome home as she got to work. The robe wrapped around me, I leaned my head back upon the chair I sat on and closed my eyes, letting her experience guide her. By the time she was done I'd near fallen asleep, but when I looked in the mirror I let loose a smile, a curve to my lips that was cat like. "Beautiful. Absolutely perfect."
My hair was loose, not a single pin in it, caught up in simple waves to flow down to the small of my back. No matter how I moved, my hair seemed lush, neverending, an endless sea of dark, ebony waves crashing upon the stark white of my robe.
"You are marvelous." My hand reached out, and I drew my index finger along her lip before giving a slight laugh and turning away again, drawing the robe from me simultaneously. I wanted to be dressed and gone once more; I was glad to be home, but already I missed Denis. "See to it the carriage is ready. I do not know if I'll be back home tonight. I've.. business to attend to."
Not bothering to look at her again, I ran my fingers over the dress I'd chosen before picking it up, hearing the door click shut behind her.
