"I don't understand, Judith!" exclaimed William. "Yesterday, we were madly in love, and today, you want to just be friends! Why? What happened?"
I sighed. "William, I like you very much, I do. I just...don't think that we are right for each other."
He had tears in his eyes. My heart hurt from having to do this to him. "But I love you," he said, beginning to weep. "Doesn't that mean anything?"
"Yes, of course it does," I said. "But if you love me, you'll let me go. Maybe someday we can be friends again."
He looked at me, sadness turning to anger in his eyes. "Go home, Judith," he snarled. "Elua help the next man to cross your path."
Later that evening, my father called me into his study. Mother was there too. "Hello Mother, Father," I said.
"Hello, my daughter," said Father. "Why don't you sit down?"
I nodded, sitting. "If this is about William, I decided to stop seeing him because I thought we weren't right for each other."
Mother put her hand on my shoulder. "That's just it, Judith. We are concerned about your...way with the young men." She looked into my eyes. "You seem to break a lot of hearts. We're concerned that this does not bode well for the Barony."
"Hang the Barony!" I exclaimed.
"Now, Judith," said Father sternly. "No one is angry at you. We want to help you."
"I don't need help," I said angrily.
"Judith," said Father. "You are the heiress to this Barony, and if you cannot find a husband, or even a consort, we will find one for you." He sighed. "You seem to have broken all the hearts in Camlach, so we have a proposition for you." He paused. "Go to the City of Elua, take classes at the Academy, do anything your heart desires. But, for the love of your family, figure out what kind of man you want, and find him."
I thought a moment. The offer was awfully tempting. "All right," I said. "I'll go."
