The return of my brother Leon signaled that it was my turn to head out. Finally, I was out on my own and yet I could feel my heart wrenching in my chest with excitement and worry. My brothers had all gone out to see the world and had returned with their newfound knowledge, a wife and some money to help the farm out, which was expanding and progressing as our family grew. Now, we had several cows and had bought the lush field next to us (nearly making us completely broke, might I add) but we were hoping to open a vineyard soon and well, I couldn’t have been more proud of all the blood and sweat I had put into it at all. It was all worth it and every inch of it had the Degrazzi name embed within it. However, I had to leave and make my claim in the world and maybe, just maybe, come back with a woman on my arm and I was heading out to the place none of my brothers had been to before me, a place that was supposedly enriched with milk and honey and the most beautiful inhabitants, sprung from the loin of the gods themselves.
Love as thou wilt.
I had no idea what THAT meant exactly but apparently it was important there. I set up on my mule, Emilia and headed out only with what I could carry on my back. It was a tear filled good bye, after all, I had not left my home except to go to town from time to time with the milk cart and even then, it was all work. I could feel my chest swelling with absolute pride. When I returned, I would be a man and find my stake on this farm. When I returned, I would not be a boy, I would be worthy of calling this farm my own.
“Bambi! Don’t forget to wash your undergarments!”
Halfway up the hill, with the sun down on me creating a silhouette and epic shadow of my journey, I heard my mom calling out to me and I could only smile and wave, assuring her that I had not forgotten and would not forget. Not this time, at least. Now, I was headed to Terre d’Ange, unsure of what I would find but I was determined to make my place for our farm. It would be great and I would not return until I had something substantial to bring back. I would make my claim in the Degrazzi cheese making name.
