His words painted a picture in my mind's eye, and it made me smile. "What is your manor like?" I asked, wanting to paint in more detail.

“Plain by most d’Angeline standards. No real ornaments or fancy architecture. It’s two stories and shaped like this,” I said, using my free hand to sketch a basic U shape in the air. “there’s a courtyard in the middle, the sleeping rooms are on one side, the kitchen and dining rooms and others stuff like that are on the opposite side with offices and the library between the two.”

"Somehow it strikes me that your library is large and loved," I commented with a smile.

“It is indeed,” I said, chuckling. “Though I will admit that a great portion of the books are related to papermaking through the ages and various techniques.”

"Are there other subjects that interest you?" I asked, fairly certain that paper making wasn't his only passion.

I thought of the subject that categorized the majority of my personal collection and blushed a little.
“Yes,” I said, trying to think my way out of my own embarrassment. “Though not of another vocation or craft. I am fairly focused on my family’s business.”

His reaction was... odd, and I didn't understand it.
"That's understandable," I replied, telling myself that I was probably misreading him, that nothing was off. "Such is the duty of the eldest."

“Indeed,” I said with a smile, pleased she’d not pressed me and I’d had to reveal my collection of romantic novels. My sister used to tell me that was why I was so shy around women, I was comparing myself to the charming heroes in those books. She said no love would ever be like that. I’d seen my parents together enough to know love really could be like that though and I wanted nothing less.
We arrived at the cage and I held the door for her.

"Thank you," I said as he held the door for me politely, and entered the restaurant. We were greeted by the same maitre d' as before, and he immediately led us to a table.

Once at the table, I held Mercedes chair for her with a smile. Gods she was beautiful, it struck me every time I looked at her.

Smiling at Teo, I settled down on the chair he held for me, absentmindedly arranging my skirt so that it didn't wrinkle.

I took my seat across from her and the server handed us each a menu.
“Would you like something to drink?” I asked Mercedes.

"Some tea perhaps?" I suggested, glancing for the section on the menu. Finding it, I made a more precise decision. "The wild blueberry please."

I had the urge to order something strong to help ease my jangling nerves, but I restrained myself.
“Tea for me also, the lemon mint,” I told the server who hurried off to fill our orders.

I smiled in return. "That's very generous of you. But it's hard to go wrong with tea I find."

I grinned. "I am a pious person," I said with a laugh. "Perhaps that is were my faith in tea comes from."

“That must be it,” I said, laughing as well. “I tend to be much more cautious and not risk disappointment.”

“Probably a better strategy than me, I’m cautious about nearly everything,” I said, chuckling.

“Business, oddly enough,” I said, chuckling and shaking my head. “I am far more confident about business than about personal matters.”

“That’s a nice way to look at it,” I said, thinking that made me sound not so mousey. The server arrived with our teas and asked us if we wanted any food. I looked at Mercedes questioningly.

"No thank you," I replied with a smile, praying he wouldn't notice that I still hadn't eaten before him.

I had been going to order something, but when she declined I did as well. It would feel weird being the only one eating again. I would eat when I got home. The server took our menus and left us alone.
“So, do you have any exciting plans upcoming?” I asked.

I shook my head with a smile, relieved that he hadn't said anything. "I have invitations, but none from people I really know. I like to live a quieter life, spend time with good friends. So no, not really."

“A quiet life does seem hard to come by here in the City,” I said with a chuckle. “It’s like no one here ever stops or sleeps.”
