More and more closely we seemed to move to each other without changing position in the slightest; likely it was only our spirits coming into sync with one another as I began to anticipate and adjust to his habits and sensations. Time itself seemed to fade until I realized the horses had begun to slow and, as a result, so had we. Smiling I looked up at him for a moment, wondering if he'd noticed as well.

I felt her eyes on me and looked down at her. Her lips were ripe and plump from all our kissing, her cheeks flushed so becomingly. "So beautiful," I murmured, caressing her cheek softly. I still couldn't believe that she had agreed to let me court her. It seemed too good to be true.

"We're nearly there," I whispered in reply, keeping his gaze meaningfully. "I'm glad you came with me. You're the person I most want to spend time with."

I kissed her forehead. "I am glad too," I murmured with a smile as I disentangled myself from her in preparation of departure.

he pulled away out of necessity but I still secretly mourned the loss of contact even as I straightened my own clothes. "Are- you still going back to Ruskovia?" I asked softly, having put off the question as long as I could.

"Alexei is still mad," I replied sadly before the door opened. "It does not look good." I stepped out of the cab and gave her a hand down.

"Oh," I replied softly, my mind tumultuous with thought as I took his hand and stepped down from the carriage. He seemed to be genuinely interested in me, and pleased by my presence- but how could our courting continue if he left? How would it affect things between us?

"But no one is putting things in trunks. Not yet," I said, trying to be encouraging as I followed her lead up the front steps. Though I wasn't sure if I was trying to convince her or myself. "If they do, I will talk to Alexei."

Smiling reassuringly I nodded and opened the door, then gently took his hand to lead him inside. "I trust you," I told him. "I just hope that things work out so I have a longer time with you."

"I do too. But I think I can make Alexei let me stay, even if it doesn't," I said, bring her hand up and kissing it softly before closing the door behind me.

Turning toward him as the door closed I met his gaze thoughtfully; though I was nearly giddy that he wanted to stay I still worried the reality of being here without his family would drive him away at a later date. "What about your family? You will miss them," I asked softly.

"And you will be happy here even missing them?" I asked thoughtfully, gaining a deeper understanding of what lay between us as well as knowing him a bit better. "But- what if I do not remain so worthy as you find me now?"

Of course- we were still standing by the door and I was being a rather poor hostess in that fact! "Yes- I'm sorry," I replied with a nod, leading him toward the nearest sitting room. "Would you like some wine, or some other sort of refreshment? I have some sweet brandy as well."

Smiling shyly I quietly requested a bottle of sweet white wine from the servant, who curtsied politely and left to gather the glasses and drink. "Please, sit," I said as I moved to a comfortable chaise and seated myself, patting the space next to me.

I sat beside her and took her hand. Before I might have felt nervous about doing so, about overstepping a boundary. But now that we were officially courting, I felt slightly less constrained by convention.
"I do not like to talk about it. But I have wanted to leave Ruskovia for many years," I told her, my eyes meeting hers.

Nodding in understanding if not commiseration- it had taken my father's convincing to free me from my fear and bring me to the City- I lightly stroked his hand as I thought about what he said. "If it isn't prying, could I ask why that would be the case?" I asked in a thoughtful tone. "Not that I'm trying to question your words, I would just like to know why you are so eager to leave your home."

"That would make me unhappy as well," I said with a soft smile. "I always felt my mother looked at me in the same way sometimes- though once she got sick I understood differently."
The servant entered quietly and set the bottle and glasses on a table near us, along with a dish of small sugar candies; with a nod I bid her leave and poured us each a goblet of wine.

I was quiet until the servant left us again and I accepted the wine from Lessa.
"To my father, I am not a good son," I said, my voice subdued. "Some years in the past, I decided that nothing I did would change his thinking. So I did on purpose what he was thinking I did." I gazed into clear liquid of the wine, thinking about the lengths I went to anger my father and then avoid him.

"Nothing you did could have been terrible," I said, watching his pensive ways. "In some form or fashion I think we all rebel against what our parents have tried to make us at some point. You are still his son- surely that means something."

"You are an adult and far too sensible for me to think you would wish to leave your home for something other than a truly reasonable thing," I reassured him kindly. "I only- hope to see the best possible outcome in all ways and to have nothing left unfinished that would later have you regret."

"Unfinished?" I asked, not really understanding what she meant. I thought I knew the word, but the way she spoke told me that she was skirting around something that I wasn't catching.
