I don’t know that I had ever been so nervous in my entire life. I had sent hours going through my small closet of clothes looking for the right thing to wear and changed my mind six dozen times. I finally had settled on dark blue doe-skin breeches, a cream linen shirt and a surcoat that matched the breeches.
I stood outside the theater, looking hopefully at every carriage that arrived, eager to see Mercedes and yet nervous that something would come up and she’d not come.

I had decided on Aragonian fashion for tonight, a peach gown that brought out the warmth in my skin with black lace at the neck and collars. A touch of drama, but still modest. I was going to see a performance after all, not to cause a scene. And hopefully impress a gentleman.
The carriage pulled up half an hour before the comedy started and the footman opened the door. I stepped out delicately, making the decent graceful which is much harder than it sounds. And he was standing right there. I smiled widely, and closed the distance between us. "Hello Teo," I said.

“Hello Mercedes,” I said, trying hard not to stare openly, she looked so beautiful. “It’s so good to see you again. You look lovely.”

Between the look on his face and the compliment, my cheeks grew rosier. "Thank you. It's good to see you again as well. I hope I haven't kept you waiting long." Mother he was handsome, those eyes intent on me. I wasn't sure how I was supposed to concentrate on the production. Especially when he leaned in to translate.

“Oh no, not long at all,” I assured her, smiling. I was so nervous that I could have been here for hours and not realized it, but I hadn’t. I still couldn’t believe she was here with me. I had read the note from her so many times I had near worn holes in the edges. “How have you been?”

"I've been well," I replied, still smiling. I felt flushed, and brought my fan out. "I'll be moving in with my cousin tomorrow or the next day. And you?"

“Well also,” I said, smiling. “Busy, but that’s a good thing right.”
I offered her my arm. “Shall we go inside and find our seats?”

I closed my fan again, and took his arm with a smile. I shouldn't have brought it, but it was an object to fiddle with when nervous. Which is exactly why it should have stayed at home, it was too good of an indicator of what I was actually feeling.
"Yes of course, please lead on. I've been quite looking forward to this performance since your invitation."

My smile, which had softened to just very happy, now bloomed again to silly proportions.
“You have?” I asked as I began to lead her towards the entrance. “Will I sound too forward if I admit that it’s been the main thing I’ve thought about since you accepted?”

"It's not too forward," I replied softly, cheeks flushing. Oh Mother, this infatuation was making me feel like a girl. "Though doubtless if the cast of the production knew how much we were both anticipating this night, they would be nervous."

I laughed and nodded as I handed the attendant our tickets and we moved inside. “Either that or they’d be so overwhelmed they’d just refuse to perform.”

"That would be a shame. I might have to pull rank," I jested with a smile as we made our way through the lobby. It was a graceful place, and though not as ornate as the hall in Aragonia, I found it even more beautiful in its simpler tones.

Chuckling at her words, I looked around a little, trying not to appear a completely tourist.
“It’s rather lovely inside,” I said. “More so than I would have thought. But I don’t know why that surprises me in the City of Elua.”

"It's very lovely," I agreed. "Very different from our hall in Amilcar. Have you visited my country Teo? I don't think I ever asked." I couldn't help but smile in his presence.

“No, I haven’t,” I answered. “I’ve only been to La Serenissima actually. Have you traveled a lot?”

"I wish," I replied with a wry smile. We were across the lobby now, and entering the theater proper.

“We’re sitting in the balcony, the front row,” I said, pointing to the right entrance for us to head towards. “I was told that was the best place to be able to see everything.”

"How wonderful," I said with a happy smile. I thought it was so sweet that he had strived for the best seats in the house. "I must admit, I was always envious of you men, getting to travel. But then I came here, and realized my lot wasn't bad at all."

“You didn’t get to travel because you are a woman?” I asked with surprise to real to mask.

"Things are different at home," I replied with a little shrug. "I was lucky that my mother is D'Angeline, it meant that at least I was fostered in Siovale."

Oh no, I was the one feeling lucky because she’d been allowed to come here.
“Is there any place in particular you’d visit first if you could travel wherever you liked?” I asked. We’d crossed through our entrance and I was mindful of the steps we had to go down to reach our seats as I led her.

"Oh, if I could go anywhere..." My voice trailed off as I thought on it. "Menekhet. If I had to choose one, I would go to Menekhet, and see the Pharoh's grand palace." I was smiling with the thought.

"Where would you go?" I asked as we stepped down the last few stairs to the front row of the balcony.

“Ch’n,” I answered, smiling as I glanced at the seat numbers to make sure we got the right ones.
“Here we are,” I said, motioning to the two nicely upholstered chairs right in the middle.

I murmured my thanks and settled in. "That's even more exotic than my answer," I teased. "Anything in particular about Ch'n?"

“Their culture fascinates me a bit,” I said. “Perhaps it is because it’s so exotic. The artwork I’ve seen from there is just amazing.”

I nodded in agreement. "The fabrics are just beautiful as well. The Reina has a gown made out of Ch'n silk, it is absolutely stunning."

“Have you been to…” I tried to think of the name of the store. “Anezka Collections? They have some lovely pieces from Ch’n there.”
The theater was filling up around us. I hoped it didn’t get too crowded for comfort.
