“I guess it’s cliché that this is the one thing I am afraid of,” I said with a wry, somewhat pained chuckle. “I just don’t know if I can handle it if she says she doesn’t love me.”

“There is nothing lame about fearing pain,” I replied gently. “Tell me, Fisher – in your darkest dreams, what is the worst that could happen?”

“She tells me she doesn’t love me, she never will, and asks me not to see her or the girls again,” I told her, not having to think about it.

“That's very dour,” I said calmly. “Now, Fisher, tell me, how long have you known her?”
I was making ready to deconstruct his fear, one block at a time.

“Years,” I answered, fiddling with my glass. “Long enough I should know how she would answer, but it’s not an easy subject to broach. I am sure there will come a time when it feels right to bring it up; I just wish it would happen soon.”

“Of course,” I replied. “Patience is half the gamble, darling, and you know it as well as I. My logic, though, was this one. If she's known you for so many years, and you're still about with her...”
I smiled a little and trailed off.
He could well guess the rest.
In whatever way he wished, as the message was twofold.

“Fair enough,” I said, raising my hands in defeat.
Fortunately, the food arrived then and I smiled. “Ah, saved by the entrées,” I said with a chuckle.

I smiled just a little, and shook my head. “Enjoy your meal, Fisher.” A beat, as the apple sauce wafted up, “-- hm, this smells great.”

“And you enjoy yours as well,” I said, though I took a long look at her. Her comment had surprised me a bit, it seemed so informal and I wondered if I had upset her.
I looked down at my food. “Yes it does,” I agreed, inhaling deeply.

Quietly I murmured a word of thanks to Anael for this, but not wanting to weigh down the rhythm of the conversation, I did not push the prayer on Fisher.
When it was done, I said, smiling, “So, tell me, how has fared Bryony in the past year?”
I didn't want to push on the matter of sentiments – he'd always been more introverted about them, and that was fine. Bringing us back to more secure ground seemed like a good solution, for now.
I trusted my friend to bring Alissande up when he would need to.

“Very well,” I answered. “We had a rather large group of adepts make their offerings and begin service. It’s been nice.”

“It sounds like prosperity keeps on plaguing the house,” I teased. “I'm glad of it.”
A pause, then. “And I'm glad that you survived, too.” More soberly, I asked, “Is everyone alright?”
After finding out that Larquel had died, I'd braced myself for more news of the same brand. It was... heartbreaking, but alas, little could be done about it, save pray for their souls to reach Terre-d'Ange-That-Lies-Beyond safely.

“No, but then every family experienced losses,” I said, sobering at her mention of the plague. “The Houses were hit especially hard, so many people in such close quarters.”

“Aye, so I heard,” I replied quietly. “I found out that a friend of mine hadn't survived, at Orchis. It broke my heart.”

“Thank you, Fisher,” I replied softly. I touched his arm lightly, fleetingly, and found a smile for him. “I'm thankful for what time we had, of course.” And smiling wider, “and thankfuller yet that you are safe.”

I had to laugh at that, and I felt the shadow of grief lifting itself from my shoulders, bless Eisheth.
“Oh, Fisher,” I teased. “Now you make me think perhaps you missed your calling.”
It was a lie – he was of course more than perfectly suited to his current place, and I hoped he would one day be the Dowayne of Bryony. He certainly was well on the path to it. Frankly, I could think of no other for such an assignment.

“Nonsense, I have just refined the skill of distracting others with laughter so I can take what I want from them,” I replied with a grin. At the same time I reached over with my fork and stole a bite of her entrée.

I managed not to choke as I laughed and swallowed all at once. “Excellent choice,” I said, smiling and indicating her dish.

For a moment I worried, but Fisher thrived (as he ever did), and I grinned in response to his compliment.
“Are you suggesting a trade? I'm open to negotiation,” I teased.

“So tell me,” I asked after I'd taken and swallowed a blisful bite. “I hear there will be a fete soon – to distract the palace from the war. Will you be attending?”

“It seems I will,” I replied, smiling a little. “I won't lie to you, it feels a touch odd, attending a fete and being... well, not being contracted.”
Dramatically, I flipped my hair, and mocking my real angst, I declaimed, “Oh, Naamah, what am I going to wear?”

I grinned back. “Or something conservative and proper. Ah, it will be quite the experience, trying to reconcile all those things.” I tilted my head and looked at him curiously. “And you will be dashing and professional, of course. I should feel terrible for all the poor little nobles who will gleefully fatten your purse, but instead, I think I will feel proud of you.”
