I raised an inquiring eyebrow at him, right back. “Oh do they now? I though you always had everything planned out, and that your plans always unfolded perfectly...”
It was, of course, a disguised question, an invitation to elaborate, that could be either taken or ignored.

“They do for the most part,” I said with a chuckle. I wondered if I could tell her about Allisande and the girls or if that was a subject I should avoid. “Though some of the plans seem to have their own timelines and don’t unfold as soon as I’d like.”

“Things rarely happen exactly as planned,” I replied, smiling wryly. “Fisher, you're beating around the proverbial bush, what is it, sweetheart?”

"Me? I am never so coy as to beat around the bush," I replied with a grin.
We turned a corner and I sighed. "Before you left, did I ever mention Allisande to you?"

I didn't think I'd ever heard Fisher sigh before, and so I raised an eyebrow, guessing already that this was quite of import.
“I think I would recall if you had,” I said, “better late than never, though.” I gave him a little smile, encouraging confidence with a relaxed and open demeanour.
It was something new, that too – something I'd learned in my year in the harsh fields of Kusheth.

“She is an adept at Dahlia,” I said, wondering just how much I was going to share. “I’ve fallen in love with her.”

I turned to look at Fisher, and it would be a lie to say I wasn't surprised – he'd always done such an excellent job of keeping a clear head...
“Hmmm,” I said, and I kept my smile small, in case it was a sad story (didn't I know about those), “-- are congratulations or sympathies in order?”
He wasn't beaming either – though that was hardly much indication.

“I’m not sure,” I admitted with a wry chuckle. “Though more likely congratulations. I know she likes my company and spending time with me, I don’t know if it’s love on her part though.”

“Perhaps,” I said tentatively, “it is a matter of pride.” For a moment, I was quiet, digesting this, feeling a world of compassion for him - and for his potential hurt, should I be wrong.
“Would you like to tell me more about her?”

“Pride? From a Dahlia adept?” I asked with a wry chuckle. I noticed the restaurant in front of us. “Perhaps over dinner, shall we?”

“Unexpected, isn't it?” I replied wryly. I nodded, though, and as we were by the restaurant, I let Fisher lead me in. “Of course, Fisher-dear.” Continued here.
