I listened to the explanation, nodding. “It all sounds reasonable,” I replied, smiling as I accepted the coin, which I counted simply by weighing the purse, a perk of being raised where wealth seeks company. Purse slipped into my robe, I bowed a little. “Should Sister Elise, or any of you need assistance with further crops, do not hesitate to send Adelaide to the temple, Brother,” I offered. “Youth is pleasant in the eyes of Lord Anael, be they touched by him, or no.”
But she was, oh she was, I could see it in her face, in her hair, in the joy of her being.

Papa rested a hand atop my head, an affectionate gesture. "We say that she was chosen by Kushiel, but she was born to Anael's line." He glanced down at me, smiling a little. "Well, my girl, perhaps we should arrange for you to perform more errands to that temple in the future."
I blinked. Was he giving me tacit permission to visit the temple? It certainly seemed to be so, which in itself was highly unusual. "I would like that, Papa," I said finally, grinning at Shona. "It would be something to do in between working on my lessons."

“I thought so,” I replied, and grinned back to Adelaide as I resisted the temptation to wink at her. “Like calls to like, and Adelaide is ever welcome, Brother. I do reckon that those twice god-touched must speak more, and with your permission, I should like to share this with your lovely daughter.”
But we were talking, and she was still there, patted on the head, and so I looked at Adelaide fondly. “Would you like that? It shan't be so much of a distraction, I promise.”

"Oh, may I, Papa? May I?" I exclaimed, fighting the urge to dance around him with glee. "I will learn all I can from Shona and use those skills to help the temple I do love working in the garden please Papa?"
My father was shaking his head, but he was smiling. "It may yet teach you the value of diligence, so long as you do not neglect your studies and do not become burdensome to the good sister."
I shook my head emphatically. "I won't I'll be good I promise thank you Papa!" I embraced him briefly, heedless of propriety, then ran to Shona. "Papa says I may learn from you, Shona," I said. "Will you teach me the prayers you say to Anael, and how to care for crops properly, like you do with the farmers?"
