At two years old, I had been fiercely attached to my father. My mother had passed away after giving birth to me, but daddy had yet to tell me this news. He had been having trouble taking care of me. He was a stable hand. He knew how to care for horses, not for little girls. When I was a baby, he had my grandma take care of me, but now that she passed away, he had no choice but to take me to work with him.
My eyes were red from crying over the bed I had shared with my grandma. "Will I ever see nana again?" I asked my father.
He didn't say anything, but merely led me down the streets of L'Agnace. I could tell that he was angry about something, but this time it was more angry than usual. I usually talked animately to him whenever we walked, but this time I stayed quiet. He set me in front of a store and told me that he was going to a place just down the street and that he would come back for me. I nodded quietly. I watched him leave as I felt a feeling of fear hit my stomach.
I waited for hours until the sun had gone down. I looked and looked for him, but he wasn't down the block he said he would be. I asked some people if they knew where my daddy was, but they all shook their head. Tears started to cascade down my face. I didn't know what to do. I walked back to the front of the store for a few minutes more, when a elderly lady came up to me. She asked me what my name was.
"Suzi," I said softly.
"Suzi? That's not much of a name. You must mean Suzette. Where is your mother?" she asked me.
I just looked down. I didn't know what to tell her. She took my hand and started talking to me more, but I couldn't give her anymore information than what I said.
She walked me down the street for a long time, then we went up some hills. We went through these very large gates and up to this very large house...
