I looked at the earrings and tried to envision what Ai was suggesting, and thought it was indeed a lovely idea. I smiled and nodded. “That sounds lovely,” I agreed. “I expect it would be a special order, and so we would need to meet again, aye?”
In truth, I didn't mind at all – if she'd accept me for a friend, I would be glad. She was intriguing, interesting, curious and gifted. And I needed to know people who weren't adepts, now that I'd left Mont Nuit.

"Yes, can make as order," I replied a moment later. It wouldn't take me more than a couple of days to make such a thing as long as I could find the right kind of wood so it would match the earrings. "Maybe done in three days. Will cost same as earrings." It wasn't very clear whether or not she was doing this out of sympathy or because she really enjoyed my work but my pride was strong enough that I truly believed it could have been the latter and that made me feel more comfortable with her. My smile widened just a bit as I looked back at her and set the earrings down by her hand.

“That's quite alright,” I replied, and I smiled still. “Those will do nicely for an event. If you make orders, would you consider more elaborate jewelry, if the opportunity arises? Courtesans such as I sometimes must attend events, and if you are to set up shop, your work having visibility at court would only help you with publicity...”
I grinned, then. I liked the idea that I may have unique items, that could become like a trademark of my own person.

She talked about setting up shop and doing more works, and while the latter was certainly a possibility the former seemed like a far-distant goal. Anything that tied me to a place for too long was something I may have to leave behind with no way to reclaim what I'd put into it. Who knew when this place would start to reject me, or when my curse would start to catch up to me? Still, this woman was kind and appreciated my work and smoothed over my pride and my nerves. "Will make whatever like, if can get right things to make from," I told her confidently. "But if want metal can only show designs, not make." I'd thought of selling some of those ideas to some of the jewelers here but as yet I didn't know who would be trustworthy or not.

“I understand,” I replied, nodding. “Well, would you like to come visit, when the necklace is ready? I will have your payment, of course... and if you'd like to be my guest for lunch, I would be honored.” I smiled a little, tilted my head. “It's a good practice, here, to eat with fellow business partners.”
In fact, what I wanted to offer her was friendship, but it seemed to be something that scared her, perhaps, or that made her uncomfortable, and so I opted for a less intrusive strategy. I was interested in her... and truth be, I wanted to know more about her country.

With every agreement I received from the lady Geraldine the more I relaxed, remembering when I was raised to enter a lifestyle much like the one she had, though with a quieter voice and likely making my business arrangements with a much different goal in mind, like dressing myself for the Imperial Court. Her offer of lunch was also one I couldn't refuse without being rude, both out of tradition and because there didn't seem to be any harm in it. How I would return the favor was another matter but perhaps if she was interested in the ways of Ch'in I could cook for her instead. "Is most kind offer, will accept," I replied with a smile and a slight, seated bow. "Where bring beads to when done?"

I grinned wide, and gave Ai my address and appropriate directions. “Thank you for accepting the invitation,” I replied. “Will a week hence be enough time for you? I will be happy to have you over.”
I was in fact more than happy – it was encouraging, and serendipitous, in a way. I intended to receive her well, to treat her like a friend, too.
