Since coming to the City there had been a lot going on and the biggest events had been the most unpleasant ones. With all of the tension, the sorrow and the different lives we kept Victoire and I hadn't been able to spend much time together, which I understood completely. In the beginning it seemed as though she couldn't leave Christien's bedside and I'd done my best to take care of things for her then. Now she was still there a good deal but in between she spent her time doing more of what I would have expected. I could only hope she was starting to feel more like herself and that soon I'd have some part of my sister back to normal. We'd always had our own interests but despite that I idolized her and wanted her to be happy.
Finally I'd decided to ask her to come out to tea and shopping with me, and she accepted, bringing a smile to my face. I'd heard of the Cour de la Chancellerie before but hadn't had a chance to go, mostly because it seemed it would be a bit of a lonely place to attend alone, but I thought Victoire would like to see something new. Everyone said it was elegant and tasteful, and that the tea was the best. I'd worn a gown of maroon with light gold embroidery and had my hair back in a ponytail under my fedora and thought I looked quite charming in it, and when we gave our names to the maitre'de he showed us to some very nice seats by a window and told us our order would be taken shortly. "What do you think?" I asked in a polite tone thick with enthusiasm. "I'm glad you could come with me today."

Tea and shopping actually sounded rather nice after the way things had been going lately. Watching Christien wither away hurt my heart, trying to befriend Coretta was exhausting, and all in all I was tired of all the pretense. With Noemi, though, there was none of that. I could be me and she could be her and together everything could be like it was in Serenissima. Like it was before Christien ever came and disrupted my life.
"I'm glad too," I said, surveying the place as we were seated. My hair was bound in a knot at the nape of my neck, not a style I usually chose but something that seemed appropriate for a 'close friend' of the Queen, or so I styled myself.
"It looks lovely, I'll grant that," I said, smiling as I touched the tablecloth, which was obviously of high quality. "But I shall reserve judgment until I've had the tea." I perused the menu quickly, though nothing in particular jumped out at me. "You said you've never been here before either, right?" It was nice to try something new with her, like old times, and I felt myself beginning to relax and enjoy the day.

My sister was always discerning and never jumped to unrealistic conclusions, both traits that I was still learning for myself, and I admired that in her. For a moment I wondered if I'd chosen somewhere that wasn't quite up to her standards, but at the same time I knew that she was my sister and would appreciate the effort. She needed to get out and about, to find a reason to feel a little more light-hearted and not always reminded of sad things. I understood why she worried, but at the same time I didn't think Christien would want her to be so sad. Who could want that for a friend?
Refusing to dwell on it any longer I smiled more widely and picked up my own menu, watching as Victoire examined things. She was relaxed but hopefully she could even get to laughing and smiling with a little time. "No, I haven't been here but I've heard good things," I told her in a cheerful tone as I looked over what they had to offer. "I've been a few other places though, and looked at some gowns and such. There's a few you might like too. I know you've been busy so I would have bought you something to help fill your closet but I didn't want to get the style wrong. 'Noemi, you have no taste!'," I playfully mimicked at the end, giving her a mirthful look.

"I've heard good things, too," I said, then laughed as she mimicked me. "Do I really sound like that?" I made a face and then laughed again, a bit more relaxed this time. I felt like myself for the first time in a long time, though that feeling only made my guilt flare up. I pushed it away, because I did what I did out of necessity and love, and was there any love purer than one that would sacrifice everything?
The server appeared quietly to take our order, and I turned my thoughts again to the page.
"I'll have the Jasmine tea," I said, then glanced at the food again. I wanted something light, because my appetite had gone along with Christien. "And a berry tart." I looked over at Noemi and smiled. "We can share the tart if you like, it's probably more than I can eat at once."

"Only sometimes, dear sister," I replied with a light laugh, glad that she had taken my little jest well and not gotten upset over it. When someone was as tense as she was they might think I was being rude and that really wasn't my intention, especially since I knew how much hard work Victoire was doing. It couldn't be easy, sitting with Christien and watching him get worse even while she tried to help him get better. I couldn't let my mind rest on those things though, this was supposed to be an escape from all of that.
When the waiter came I gave him a bright smile and then listened to Victoire's order, her choice very much like I would have expected, though her statement about the tart made me shake my head. "I'll have a ginger-orange tea and a chicken salad sandwich," I said, then watched as he wrote it down and walked away before I glanced back at Victoire. "You need to eat all of your tart or you'll slide straight out of your laced gowns," I told her in a playful tone though there was a little bit of concern there. "Or if you share I will too. Remember when we used to do that in the cafes in Serenissima, the ones that overlooked the canal?"

"I do, and that is a wonderful idea," I said, remembering all of the lunches and dinners we'd shared, all the laughter and gossip. Things had changed so much since Christien and I met. Not all of it good, and since coming to Terre d'Ange, not much of it good at all. Sometimes I looked into the mirror and did not even recognize myself.
"Remember that cafe that had the terrible roast pheasant? I honestly think it was dog, it was so bad." I laughed at the memory, we'd barely been able to keep our composure after one bite. "And we brought it home, and the kitchen help wouldn't even touch it?"

It brought a bright smile to my face to know that my sister still had fond memories of the times we'd shared, even if I had been a bit of a pest for some of them. I didn't see myself that way but then if I'd had a little sister I might have. "I don't think even my cats and dogs would have touched it," I said with a merry laugh. "They didn't even like the smell. Perhaps it was roasted rat or skunk instead and they forgot to boil away the smell?"
At at a mischievous look came over my face and I cocked my head, tapping my lip as I thought of various other things that we'd done together. There still seemed to be a shadowed look to Victoire's features and I couldn't understand why- but at least it was lightening. If this made her feel better maybe the key was to keep reminding her of better times. Could she be homesick on top of everything else? "I got a new puppy, you know, and a couple of new kittens. Did you see them? I'm trying not to fill up the place the way I did my little spot in La Serenissima but the animals here are as lovely as the people."

It didn't surprise me that Noemi had more new animals, but to be honest, she could have adopted an entire farm and stored them at the townhouse and I mightn't have noticed. I spent most days at the Palace, or out, and when I was home it was just to sleep. I couldn't bear to be alone too long these days.
"I think I may have tripped over one this morning," I jested, and in fact, I did seem to recall a small ball of fuzz peeking out of my closet just yesterday. I did not share my sister's affinity for animals, though neither did I dislike them. "As long as you can care for them, they don't bother me." It was true, and it was sweet the way she looked after them. Most of the nobility only cared for animals as food and wouldn't bother with a dog even to kick it. Horses and falcons, those were the animals of the noble houses.
"How many have you right now?" I asked, resolving to take more of an interest in my sister's life.

My sister had always been very patient with my odd ways, bringing home odd pets and taking up space, or having dogs and cats running about. I'd even gotten a ferret once, though he'd gotten free more than a few times. Victoire didn't have to be so nice about it when she was the one in charge here but the fact that she allowed it, even if she wasn't home very much. "I'll look after them," I promised, eyes flashing in mirth. "But I bet you'll go looking for one of them sometime. They really are nice, especially when you need to take your mind off of something."
A moment later the server was returning with our tea orders and I gave him a bright smile as I took my cup and saucer and set it down before reaching for the honey-bowl. "So far I have two kittens- an orange one named Leo, and then a silver tabby named Minette," I told Victoire, swirling a little of the sweet liquid into my tea before I put the spoon back and slid the dish toward her. "And then when I was out in the City I found someone giving away shepherd puppies, and that's how I got Vesta. She'll be bigger than most of the dogs I had in Serenissima but she's a good hunter already and a little protective too."

"That's not so many," I said, adding a tiny bit of honey to my tea. I never had cared much for sweet things, at least as far as drinks were concerned. Obviously that taste did not run against things like tarts. "Christien has a shepherd puppy," I said, thinking about the day that the kennelmaster had brought the puppies, brother and sister, one for him and one for Coretta. I fed Christien's sometimes, and pet him while he slept at the foot of Christien's bed. Perhaps I liked animals more than I thought.
"Perhaps they can play together sometime," I added, taking a sip of my tea and reveling in the warmth that ran along my throat and took away some of the coldness that I was always feeling these days. "Mm, the tea is really good, it's steeped perfectly." That was a matter of taste, of course, but this tea was just as I liked it.

"Oh, so those puppies did get discovered!" I said eagerly, glad that the little puppies I'd heard about were doing well and near the people who needed them. "When I danced with Christien at our welcoming fete he told me about them, but said it was a secret present for Coretta. Then everything happened and I didn't know what had happened to them." He'd probably only told me that because he knew I liked animals but it was still a good memory of a happier time and I smiled at it.
After a little stirring the honey had disappeared completely into the tea and I carefully picked up the cup, the blew across the surface before I took a sip. "Wow, this place really is good!" I said once I'd swallowed, my pleasure clear in my voice and likely the look on my face as well. "Do you really think I could take Vesta up to the Palace to play with the other puppies? She wouldn't be in the way or anything? You know Coretta better than I do, I don't want to disturb her with how busy she must be lately."

"Oh, you already knew about them?" I asked, wondering suddenly what other secrets Christien had shared with her. The two of them were closer in age than Christien and I were, and it had often worried me, though I did not think Noemi would ever try to take Christien from me. No, that had been for Silvana to do. I nearly stabbed my tart thinking about her, but I forced a smile to my face instead.
"I think it would be fine, the kennelmaster is the one giving them all of their exercise and he could probably give you some tips for raising Vesta. I'm sure Coretta wouldn't mind, I think it would make her happy to know the puppies were getting some exercise." I took another sip of my tea and then a bite of my tart. It was actually a lot better than I'd expected.
"You should definitely try this," I said, pushing the plate towards her a bit.

"Yes, but I think he only told me because he knows that I'm always working with animals," I replied cheerfully, not even thinking that my sister would see anything untoward in that. All of my friends knew about my tendency to take in creatures that needed help, or even ones that just needed a home, and Christien had started doing the same. He'd been much closer to Victoire in everything else, so one point of commonality wasn't that odd, was it?
Setting my teacup aside I cut my sandwich in half and picked part of it up, then took a bite. and listened to Victoire. She did know the palace and its ways better than I did, so I would trust her outlook. She was my sister, it came naturally to do so. "I'll be sure to bring her by then, I know Vesta would like the company," I replied with a smile once I'd swallowed, then looked at the tart she slid over and did the same with my sandwich, pushing it toward her gently. "I'll try yours if you try mine, it's really good too." With that I picked up a fork and broke off some tart and took a bite.

"That sounds like a good idea," I said, taking a bite of the sandwich that she'd sent my way. "Mmm, that is really good," I exclaimed, surprised, because in general I'd found that restaurant food was never as good as what the cooks at home and at the Palace could come up with. Unless it was for dessert, I had had some fabulous desserts out in the City.
"We should bring Cygnus here," I said, though I had not seen much of him of late. Things were tense at the Palace and he and Jaime spent so much time closeted together that I forgot sometimes that my brother was even in the City at all. "And Jaime too, I suppose," I added, though there was something about my brother's commander that made me feel like I needed to bathe. Still, any friend of Cygnus was a friend of mine.

The tart that I tried was naturally sweet, and reminded me somewhat of the one I'd gotten from Cher Fantasie- though that had been eaten under far different circumstances and ones that my sister may not have wanted to hear about. We'd always been open with each other, but lately there had been small secrets and I couldn't deny her that when I kept some of my own. Nevertheless I chewed and swallowed with a slight smile and flush on my cheeks before I turned my attention back to her.
"I think we should drag Cygnus wherever we can," I agreed with a brighter smile once I'd gathered my thoughts back to me again. "He probably needs the chance to relax, but I know what he's doing is important too. Maybe once things calm down he'll be able to get away a little more." It was more of a hopeful thought than one based on any current events but there had to be some light at the end of this darkness, didn't there? "How have you been though? I know you've been spending a lot of time at the Palace too."

"I hope so, I miss him. We barely saw him once he left Serenissima, and now that Commander of his always has him." I pouted slightly and then smiled to show that I was not truly out of sorts over it.
"Me?" I was surprised that she'd asked, but I shouldn't have been. Noemi had always been more concerned about others than herself, a trait I simply could not comprehend. Not that I didn't care about other people, but my own wants and needs always superseded the wants and needs of others. If one did not look out for oneself, who would?
"I'm all right. I'm worried about Christien, of course. He is getting thinner by the day and I fear that even if the poison does not kill him, he will simply waste away." I truly was afraid of that, and I knew that I would have to secure a betrothal sooner rather than later or I would lose him completely.

That Victoire seemed so surprised at my question made me feel a little guilty; why wouldn't she expect that sort of a question unless I hadn't been asking it enough? I cared about Victoire, she was my sister and my friend and I wanted her to feel like she had someone who would listen if she had troubles, someone that she could come to. After all, she'd do the same thing if I needed someone, wouldn't she?
When she started to speak I gave her a sympathetic smile and reached over to gently squeeze her hand before I picked up my glass of tea and took another sip, letting her finish talking without interrupting. "That's definitely not good," I agreed quietly once she'd said her peace and I could see the concern in her eyes. "I went to see him after the wedding and he was starting to look thin then. Does he seem to be getting any better?"

I shook my head, though the guilt in my belly threatened to spill forth at any moment. Talking about Christien this way made me more aware than ever that what I was doing was not exactly right, but it was necessary, and that was more important. Once this was all over, and Christien and I were wed, this part of it would all seem like a bad dream. A terrible nightmare that led to a bright future.
"He's about the same, medically, but of course since he can't eat, he isn't receiving enough nutrition. We do our best, but there's no substitute for actually eating and drinking." I felt badly about that, and I vowed to make sure Christien ate well as soon as it was safe to let him wake up.

All I could do was listen and know that my sister was trying her best to make sure that Christien got well as soon as possible- after all, what else would she do? I knew from the animals I'd cared for that while he was sleeping there was nothing to do but try to get him to drink as much as possible and hold out until he woke up. Elua, let him wake up before he weakens so much he can't.
Smiling more widely I gave Victoire a look of complete confidence and nodded in understanding. "I'm sure it will work out," I told her, then took another bite of my sandwich and followed it with a swallow of tea. The food here was so good and while it wasn't a perfect distraction from the worrisome conversation it did bring better spirits. "But you have to keep your strength up too, or I'll have to start taking care of you at home and keep you there until you eat all of your meals, like you're one of my sick puppies back in La Serenissima."

I laughed softly, though I had no doubt that Noemi meant every word. She seemed so sweet and innocent sometimes, yet she could be implacable when it suited her.
"I will try to take better care of myself," I promised, and I had to admit that the tart was delicious and having food in my stomach was making me feel a bit more optimisitc about things in general. With that in mind, I flagged down our server and ordered a bowl of soup as well.
"Now then," I said, returning my attention to my sister. "Have you met a lot of interesting people in the City?" Unlike in Serenissima, Noemi was much more gregarious than I, and had probably met quite a few more people as well.

It seemed as though my sister was taking my words to heart because she laughed and smiled and agreed with me, then asked for a bowl of soup to be brought to the table. I wouldn't have been so forceful except that I knew how stubborn she could be at times, especially when she believed she was doing what was right in the bigger picture. Taking care of Christien and seeing that everything was alright was important to her, so she forgot about herself. There was something lovely about that.
Once the food was ordered my sister looked back at me and asked me about my time in the city, which brought a smile to my face and a light flush as well. "I've met some interesting people," I admitted in a playful tone, cheerfully recalling my friends. "You already met Eric, he was the first friend I made here. Then there's Josette Bradamante and her brother Luc, Matt de Montague and Maric de Verais. Oh, and Sebastien- a lot of people I suppose." My smile widened a bit and I lowered my voice as I leaned a bit closer. "And I went to the Night Court too."

"Oh, I've met Luc," I said, finally hearing a name I recognized. Of course, I dropped that immediately when she said she'd gone to the Night Court.
"Oh you did not!" I exclaimed, my eyes widening as I lowered my voice. "When did you do that? Which House did you go to?" I was full of questions, since I had been planning to go - most especially after my night with the Orchis from the welcome fete, the memory always made me smile - but I hadn't yet had the time. It was strange to think that my little sister had gone before me, but then it was past time that I stopped thinking of her as a child.

As soon as I'd said 'Night Court' I was almost certain Victoire would latch onto it, especially since I remembered how much eagerness she'd shown at the idea of going. It was a little sad that she hadn't been able to go herself, at least as far as I knew, but then she'd taken that Orchis home with her the night of our welcoming fete. If it had been anything like the time I'd met Remy there then she had to have enjoyed herself. Perhaps I would go there another time and get an assignation this time.
"No, really I did," I teased, nose wrinkling a bit in mirth and eyes flashing as I teased. It was so nice to have something that we could gossip and laugh about! Almost out of habit I slipped into Serenissiman just so it would be a conversation only between the two of us, at least in theory. "Last week I heard about a debut at Heliotrope and I went to see what all of it was about because there's supposed to be so much important in that. It's so lovely there! Well, I went and I met Jourdan..." There I let my voice trail off just a little to build the dramatic tension, though I couldn't stop the grin that moved over my lips. "And I won! It was sweet and wonderful. You really should go if you can."

It was a bit strange to think of Noemi purchasing an adept, but I had to remember that she was no longer a child.
"Heliotrope, hmm? Was he as devoted as they say?" I liked the idea of having an adept devoted to solely me, even if I was paying for the privilege. "Oh, and you bought a virgin?" I said, raising a brow and also speaking in Serenissiman, mostly out of habit. "What was that like?" I realized that I personally had never been with a virgin, mostly because I tended to like men that were quite ... forward. Still, it must be sweet to be someone's first, perhaps I should try it sometime.

For a moment Victoire had an odd expression on her face, but then it passed and I let it go completely from my mind. It was probably only that she was my older sister and still saw reasons to worry over me. I'd just have to show her I was being careful and that should help her feel a bit better.
Since she continued in Serenissiman I did the same, another bright smile coming over my face. "He was very devoted, I will say that, but I don't want to ruin any surprises if you end up going there yourself," I teased lightly, giving her a wink. "Yes, he was a virgin, and it was all very sweet. Really, all I can say is that if virgin adepts are like that what must the more experienced ones be like?" At that I couldn't stop the giggle that broke free and the flush that moved over my cheeks.

"Oh, they're very well trained all right..." I said, thinking again of our welcome fete. "But yes, I should like to visit several of the Houses, if only to appease my curiosity. I wonder," I said, taking a bite of food as I mused, "if those of the Night Court ever resent their bonds? It seems like a bit of a glamorous life to those on the outside, but what is it truly like?" We were all bound by our circumstances, and it seemed to me that no matter how I struggled with mine, I would never be more than the upstart daughter of an ambassador. Being a Princess had availed me nothing.
Before the food could turn to ashes in my mouth, I tried to turn my thoughts away from fate and the curse of blood and everything I'd done for love, because I knew I was losing my grip on things and what then?

While she spoke I ate and drank a bit, letting the delicious food and tea distract me somewhat from the memories I'd dredged up all on my own. What she said made a lot of sense but I wanted to let her finish completely, and get some more food in my own stomach, so I let her words settle in before I answered her. It was probably a good idea though since I'd spent some time wondering about the same thing myself and looking at it from two different points of view.
"I think it's a little different because it's a choice," I replied a moment later, my tone still somewhat thoughtful and my words still Serenissiman. "But I don't know that everyone has the same choice as others. My friend Eric was in the Night Court until there was and accident and they sent him away. He's had to change the way of thinks of things because the world isn't always like he expects. But at the same time there are adepts who love their Houses and their lives. Perhaps it always comes down to the person."

"Is it really a choice, though? I mean, you're born into a House, or sold into it, and then you have to make your marque somehow..." I shrugged then, it wasn't truly any concern of mine. "I suppose you're right, everyone's different."
I finished the soup and wondered when I should take the time to visit the Night Court myself. Perhaps I would simply ask an adept. "Well, enough of that, what shall we do with the rest of our day?" I asked, forcing myself to be cheerful and stop letting my mind turn back to Christien.

Victoire always saw the way that things didn't work and I always knew that likely made her much smarter than I was, because I only saw how it could. It was part of the reason I respected her so much because I knew how intelligent, clever and witty she could be while I was only bright sometimes. Besides, she was right, whether I wanted to admit it or not.
When she changed the subject I smiled and thought for a moment, taking the last sip of my tea and setting it aside for now. "There's a good many shops here. I don't know if you've had a chance to visit them yet," I suggested cheerfully. "And a Playhouse. One of my friends mentioned a candy shop that might have some Serenissiman sweets too. Why not try to see as much as we can and not worry about where we end up? It might be fun to let our feet lead us for a little while, so our minds can rest."

"That's a good idea," I said, smiling and pushing the melancholy away. Where had it all come from? Since the day I had thrown in my lot with a foreign assassin I had not known peace. But it was worth it, for Christien, wasn't it?
"It will be like an adventure," I said, finishing my tea, which had grown a bit cold and bitter. "Perhaps we will find some hidden gems like we did in Serenissima and everyone will be jealous and wonder where we come by such fabulous things." It made me smile, the memory of Serenissima, and I wanted suddenly to be back there, to be younger and more innocent, and know only the happy side of love, not the truth of it: that it was pain and heartache and fear all twisted into one.
