Mother’s birthday was approaching and if I wanted to make sure the gift I got her arrived in time, I needed to find something soon. Now that I was drawing a captain’s salary, I decided to get her something fully wonderful and impractical, just the sort of thing she’d want but never buy herself.
Now, if I could just figure out what that was….
I stepped into what I was told was one of the best jewelry shops in the City and hoped that it would hold what I was looking for. Taking a deep breath, I stepped to one of the display counters and began perusing the wares.

I made my way into the jewelery shop. I wasn't sure if I was there to take a look at what Elua had to offer, or if I was consciously looking for a potential gift for my potential wife, or a gift for my sister in Camlach. I went to the counter and began perusing the jewelry that I could see.
I spoke out softly to myself, unaware that anyone was near besides the clerk, "Does she like gold...or silver..?" I tried to think about what kind of jewelery my sister wore. I think she wore both.

I heard a soft voice to my left and glanced at the man next to me. From what I could hear of his words, he seemed to searching for a gift as well.
“It is harder than one thinks it’s going to be, isn’t it?” I asked with a chuckle.

I turned to see a dark haired gentleman. I nodded, "Sometimes it seems much simpler to simply give them the funds to select whatever they wish. And yet that is somehow, not personal enough."
I held out my hand to the man, "Marquise Renard de Valliers." I spoke simply.

Taking his hand, I returned the introduction, “Capitaine Perrin Duré,” I said with a smile. “In my case, I don’t think my mother would find a gift of funds thoughtful enough, especially for her birthday.”

My respect for the man immediately went up when I heard that he was a Captain. If I had the chance, I would have joined the military, but I had far too many responsibilities at home. I gave the man a firm handshake, but not a crushing one.
"Percisely the problem, sir," I admitted to him. "I guess you don't know what's in season..? Silver or Gold? It seems to change every year, and I can't keep up." I shook my head lightly as if saying that I shouldn't have to keep up with such trends. It was difficult enough catching up with the trends of clothes. Thankfully male clothes trends didn't change very often.

“Oh, I am the wrong person to ask such things,” I said with a laugh and slight shake of my head. “I’m just hoping to find something mother will like enough to wear when I’m not around, not just when I am to please me.”

I nodded in understanding as I looked through the list of options, "I think I might just stay with silver. I know that she has been thinking about becoming a Priestess of Eisheth. She would probably like the Eisheth symbol..." I picked up a silver necklace that had the Eisheth symbol which was of 2 fish touching head to tail.
I turned to Perrin, "Do you know what kind of jewelery she likes?" I was referring to Perrin's mother.

“He wears both silver and gold, but very few gems. She likes pearls though, so if I found something with those I would at least be on the right track,” I answered. I looked at the necklace he held. “That seems like a perfect gift for someone serving Eisheth, it’s lovely.”

I nodded when he spoke about pearls. Pearls were quite popular, but I didn't think Angelique liked them. I called the clerk over, "How much for this?"
The clerk looked the item over, "100 ducats."
Renard shook his head vigriously, "You must be joking, because that isn't a fair price at all. I'll go 50."
The clerk shook his head, "90 ducats."
"That's not much of a change in price. 60," Renard tried again. He glanced at Perrin, curious to what his thoughts were.

“It does seem like a design that would be available elsewhere,” I commented to Renard. “I’m certain you could find a better price down the street.”

I nodded to Perrin, "Very good point." I turned to the clerk, "Perhaps I should go elsewhere for a better price.."
The clerk shook his head and then spoke up, "Alright, 70 ducats."
I smiled at the clerk, "That's a much better price. I'll go with 70 as long as you gift wrap it for me and have it sent to my home in Camlach."
When the clerk nodded, I took out my bag of coins and pulled out the right amount of coins. I paid the clerk and handed over the necklace. While the clerk moved to gift wrap the necklace, I turned to Perrin, "Thanks for the help. Have you decided if you're going to purchase anything?"

“You’re welcome,” I said with a chuckle. “And no, I’ve not really had much chance to look just yet.”

Renard nodded, "Well, good luck then. It was nice meeting you, Captain Dure`." I gave a casual salute and then made my way out of the store, hoping that the item I picked would be one that my sister would appreciate.

I watched him go with surprise; I’d not expected him to just leave. I’d enjoyed talking to him and had hoped to ask his advice as he had mine.
Shaking my head a little, I turned back to the case to look over the items, still hoping to find one that mother would like.
