“I can imagine you have to do a lot more dodging than me,” I said, chuckling. “What is your favorite thing to do instead of paperwork?” I was trying to get a better feel for who he was.

"Hunting. It's the perfect excuse to get outdoors, away from all the noise and general milling about of life," I replied. Perhaps it wasn't the most political of answers, but I had a feeling that she didn't much care about politics. "And yours?"

I had no problem imagining him hunting, he really did seem built for it.
“Nothing in particular. With me it more depends on the mood I am in at the time,” I answered with a smile. Sophia returned with the tray, setting it down carefully before withdrawing.
Scooting to the edge of my chair, I picked up the teapot and poured us each a cup. “Do you take anything in your tea?”

"A splash of cream please," I requested. I leaned forward in my chair when she offered me the cup to be polite, so she wouldn't have to stretch so far.

I added the splash of cream and then handed him the cup before adding a touch of honey to my own.
“I highly recommend the cookies, if you’ve a sweet tooth. My cook has just perfected these, they have cardamom in them and are just divine,” I told him as I sat back in my chair. “I think she’s trying to get me fat.”

"An ambitious woman then," I said, happily accepting a cookie. I would always happily accept a cookie. "Mmm, these are good."

“I think Christophe has offered her a bonus for every item she can come up with and get me addicted to,” I said, chuckling. I took a sip of my tea and then set it beside me on the table. “When you return to Alba, what is life like for you there?”

"It's... different," I said, trying to think of how to explain. "We go far more by the sun. Almost all the men train before breakfast, and then work through the day. It will be more varied when I return, my mother wishes me to take on more responsibilities. Build me up to my position, as it were."

“Ah, so you’ll be focused on duties,” I said, though my tone made it obvious that was more question than statement. I’d gotten the feeling through Christophe that Marie was very attached to this boy; I wondered how soon he would be breaking her heart.

"Aye," I said before dutifully taking a sip of tea. Something I couldn't put a finger on told me that she was measuring me and finding me wanting, but I didn't know what fault she could find with my answer. I was the heir, and as such had to take my responsibilities seriously.

He was being reserved, and while that might be good in a leader, it did not serve my purpose at all.
“Do you have a bride waiting at home?” I asked bluntly.

I looked at her for a minute in surprise, and then snorted in laughter. I appreciated the honesty of the question. "You'd make a good Alban my lady. No, I don't have a bride waiting, though I imagine I'll be pressured to marry very soon."

“Your future wife will be Alban?” I asked. In for a copper, in for a ducat.

"I will doubtlessly be encouraged to wed the daughter of one of the clan leaders," I said, hedging. Then I sighed, for I wasn't very good at dancing around the subject. Besides, Malabelle seemed far too bright to be fooled by my awkward attempts at skirting the answer. "May I be blunt and not to have it leave these walls my lady?"

“I can give my word not to bring the subject up, but if Christophe was to ask me about it directly, I will not lie,” I replied honestly. “Not to my husband.”

"I suppose that's fair," I said softly. I paused then, took a sip of tea to think about my words. "I am not someone of inconsistent affections. And I... love Marie. I haven't told her that though, because... well, because of the politics. There is only a very, very slim chance that I can be with her and not cause my authority to crumble. Especially with my aunt engaged to the Duc of Camlach." I looked Malabelle in the eye, and let her see in my gaze the pain the situation caused. "I am trying very hard not to hurt Marie. But I'm selfish enough to try for that very, very slim chance for the two of us to be happy together."

I listened to him, and his words felt honest and true.
“From experience I can tell you that fighting to be with the one you love is not as selfish as it may feel,” I told him. “And as for Marie… I think she is stronger and more realistic than most give her credit for. Christophe has told me that she had to fight their father and oldest brother to come to the City for our wedding, that she was willing to do whatever was needed to follow her heart.”
I looked at him for a long second and then smiled. “You two are quite suited for each other,” I said with a soft chuckle. “If there is ever anything I can do, please just let me know.”

I grinned a little. It felt very good to have the blessing of Marie's sister-in-law, and an offer of help. "Thank you my lady. If I can think of anything, I will certainly speak with you."

“Wonderful,” I said, smiling.
I glanced at the time candle in the corner. “Marie should be home any moment; shall I let you greet her?”

“Then I shall go and deal with that paperwork,” I said with a chuckle. Rising, I smiled at him. “It’s been very nice to meet you, your grace.”

“Until next time, Ferris,” I said, smiling as I took my leave. As I walked to my study, I wondered how much I should tell Christophe. Perhaps I would just tell him I’d met the boy and see where it went. That seemed the best idea.

I sat after she left the room. Settling down to wait for Marie, the rest of the cookies soon disappeared, leaving only crumbs and a cooling pot of tea.
