I was about to respond when Adrien interjected. "I fished him out of a ditch six years ago." His tone was dry, and I wondered if his eyes sparkled with amusement. He certainly sounded amused enough.
"Adrien! That's...not the whole truth of it..." I bumped his shoulder with my fist. "You're the one who threw me in there!"
He snorted. "You deserved it." I could hear his grin as he said his next words. "And you've been nothing but trouble since then, bastard Prince."
"Gods, Adrien! Stop calling me that, someone will get the wrong idea and hold me for ransom!" I exclaimed. "And I prefer to keep fighting for my life in derelict old buildings to a minimum."

My brows rose but I laughed at their conversation. "So Adrien threw you into a ditch and then fished you out. I suppose that's a nice enough start to a friendship," I joked. "No worries, Mael, I would pay your ransom. May I ask why you were fighting for your life?" I inquired quietly, not wanting any other patrons to overhear our conversation.

I paused in the act of cutting a crepe. "Why does anyone put their life in danger? To eat, to defend those they love, even to live another day in the hope that tomorrow will be better."
I popped the piece of crepe into my mouth, chewing and swallowing before continuing. "And sometimes you say the wrong thing and someone gets cross with you..." I grinned.

My eyes widened. "Oh... Well yes, I suppose those are all quite valid reasons...." I trailed off, unsure of what to say. How did one follow that up? I really needed to learn the art of dissembling.
I ate a few more bites of my crepe, it all but gone now, and chewed and swallowed before I spoke again, clearing my throat first. "So... Ah... Well... Eisheth above, I sound like quite a fool, don't I?" I said sheepishly. "I suppose I'm not quite sure what to say! Have you any questions for me? You're welcome to ask anything you like, since I've pried into your life," I offered with a smile, hoping once again it transferred into my voice.

I shrugged. "I don't make a habit of asking too many questions, m'lady. The wrong question can have unpleasant consequences." I popped another piece of crepe into my mouth. "Especially among the nobility." I shrugged again. "I also don't make a habit of being in the same place as too many nobles, bad for the circulation." I grinned, using my fork to point in Adrien's direction. "Besides, Adrien is seldom fit for polite company, though he is being quite exceptional today."
