"Maybe it's not my place to say but I don't think Fydor wants to follow the traditions of his culture in that regard. He's said that he wants a wife that will talk to him and listen, and we're equals in everything. But from what he's said is father is very traditional in their ways, as are some other members of his family, and that means that while I'm there I'll behave in their preferred way. Once we're back in Terre d'Ange I'm sure things will be different though." It wasn't anything less than the truth and I hoped that it assuaged my father's concerns and I gave him a confident smile. "Thank you for thinking that I can do this. Sometimes I worry that I can't and I don't want to lose him." And I really didn't want to even think about that possibility, not when there was still so much that could exist between is, and with a light flush I looked at my hands, clasped in my lap.

"I have faith that you will dazzle the Tsar with your modesty and demure nature," I said, winking. "And it assuages me to know that Prince Fydor is more...open-minded than his father."

My father's faith in me was a comfort to my raw nerves and quieted my fears and I glanced at him with a smile, one of my hands rising to push some hair back from my face. "I'm glad that you have so much faith in me- there hasn't really been anyone else I could talk to about this, what with things never being formalized and the falling out between Prince Alexei and the Queen. Do you think things will be terribly different when we come back with Fydor, with he and I being married?"

"Different from what?" I asked. "The way things are with you now?"

"Yes, a little. I mean, I'm sure there may be some who aren't happy about having Ruskovia in an alliance with our country even if I'm not royalty," I replied quietly. "Not that I'm really concerned, people can think what they wish, but some of the peerage aren't terribly understanding in matters of foreigners."

"I doubt any one of them would dare to protest true love," I said, "especially when that love might potentially be so lucrative." I winked. "When the trade is good and they do well by you, they will remember you and be thankful."

"They would protest if they thought there was a chance of a better opportunity," I said in a practical, wry tone that was a little more bitter than my usual way of speaking. Realizing that though I took a deep breath and smiled weakly. "But that's why we trust to the gods to help, isn't it?"

"That is why," I said. "We had better pray a lot on this voyage, don't you think?"

"Yes, and I'll be trying to prepare myself by studying as well," I replied with another smile. Laurel was still playing happily and that was a good thing; at least I knew my gift to him was well-received.

"The Yeshuites say that learning is prayer; they do it for the glory of their God," I commented. "I know our gods will bless your endeavor, my daughter, for love is the glorious gift they gave us."
