“I should have known you’d have it all figured out,” I said, smiling. “You seem to think of everything.”
I looked at her and Emilia, and my smile turned fond. “You look good with a baby in your arms, Reese had better like the idea I think.”

"You think so? It's... not something we've talked about. I don't want to push him," I explained, bringing my free hand up so that Emilia could grab onto my finger and play with it. "But maybe it's time, at least to start testing the waters. It's been... it's been six months now." Thinking on it, counting the weeks of happiness I'd had, it surprised me how quickly the time had passed.

“Having a baby around will be an easy and natural way to start the conversation,” I said. “At least it won’t seem like you are pressuring him.”

I smiled and looked up from Emilia. "Excellent. The last thing I want is to scare him into running the other way."

“Good point,” I agreed, smiling.
A girl entered with a tray of tea and without staring I did my best to memorize her. Claire, Juliette had said. Claire. If I was to be staying here, I would know everyone’s names.

"Thank you Claire, here on the coffee table is perfect," I told her with a smile. She smiled back and soon left us again. "So which inn did you set yourself up in?"

“The Lord and Lady,” I answered. Juliette’s hands were full with Emilia so I poured us both tea. It felt good to be even this useful; I’d not been allowed to do even this small act for guests when I had been with Elliot.

I was glad to hear that she had checked herself into a reputable place, both because it meant she was safe and because it meant that Elliot hadn't thrown her out with nothing but the clothes on her back and their daughter. "Good. Be sure to take Marc with you when you collect your things, he's got strong arms and always loves an excuse not to muck out the stable," I said with a bit of a grin. Emilia had popped my captured finger into her mouth and was busy gumming on it, but I didn't mind. When she started teething it would be a different matter.

“Well, as long as I am getting him out of mucking, then I will make sure to bring him with me,” I said, chuckling before taking a sip of tea.
I watched Emilia as she tried to chew on Juliette’s finger. “She does that with everything, in her hands and then into her mouth. Until now I never realized how many things were around for her to pick-up.” I set my cup down. “Let me know if you want me to take her back so you can have some tea. Otherwise she’s likely to want to sample every one of your fingers.”

"I don't mind a bit of baby slobber," I said with a laugh. "Though you're probably tired of it by now." Gently I pulled my finger free, covertly wiping it off on a bit of her blanket so that I could drink my tea one-handed.

“I don’t mind, really,” I said. “It’s hard to believe, I was so terrified of being a mother of not knowing what to do, but now I can’t imagine a life without her.” My smile faded and I looked at my teacup. “I hope when she’s older she can understand why her father isn’t around.”

I looked down at the happy little face, and hoped for the same. "What will you tell her?"

“I hope that Elliot doesn’t completely abandon her, but as things are right now I think that is a futile hope. I’ll tell her the truth once she is old enough, until then I am not certain,” I answered.

I nodded in understanding. "Would you like me to speak with him?" I offered. I was opening myself up to a possibly very uncomfortable discussion with my cousin, but I would do it for the babe in my arms.

“Thank you, but no,” I said, smiling gratefully even as I shook my head a little. “Elliot would not take kindly to you doing so; he would never forgive you most likely. I won’t ask you to put yourself in that position.”

"Alright, let me know if you change your mind," I said with a smile, though secretly I was rather relieved. While Elliot and I weren't close, I didn't want to put a strain on our relationship.

“I will,” I said, giving her another smile and then taking another drink of tea.
“I should probably go get our things from the inn so that we can have it all done before sunset,” I told her. “I really do appreciate this, Juliette.”

"It's the least I could do. Would you like to leave Emilia here, or take her with you?" I asked. I was more than willing to look after my little cousin for a time, but I didn't know what she would be most comfortable with.

“If you don’t mind, then leaving her with you would make things go faster,” I said, smiling. “Thank you.” as I said the words, I realized how different this was then when I’d been in Elliot’s house and never wanted to be apart from Emilia. Somehow, this just felt safer.
“I fed her just before we arrived, so she should be fine for a little while,” I told Juliette as I stood.

"Excellent," I said with a happy smile. I stood as well, easily cradling Emilia in my arms. I had always loved spending time with the babes at Montegue, and the proper hold was just natural now. "Don't worry about a thing. We'll be here when you get back, and she'll be even more spoiled than before."

“I’m not sure that’s possible,” I said with a laugh. I kissed Emilia’s cheek and then Juliette’s. “Thank you.”
With a wave I left to take care of things as quickly as possible.

I smiled and settled back into the chair to play peek-a-boo with my adorable little cousin.
