“I am very happy that you found that life,” I said, still smiling and bringing my hand back. “You and Lessa deserve a life full of happiness.” My smile turned to a grin. “And children.”

I chuckled. "I pray that we are blessed with many children. Though Lessa more modest goals I think," I added before taking another bite.

“You’ll just have to make the getting of them so wonderful she can’t resist,” I said, teasing him good-naturedly.

I laughed. "Or at least the making of them," I replied with a grin.

I had meant the same thing, but it didn’t matter. I laughed along with him. It was good to laugh, so good. I hadn’t thought I would laugh so easily again for many years.
“So, have you and she done any practicing yet?” I asked, grinning.

I looked down and shook my head with a rueful grin. "Soon though I think. Well, maybe not so soon anymore. But before we marry. She wants to make sure that we are compatible."

I chuckled, but then painful memories began to surface and I sobered.
"Take my advice as the word of experience, make sure are compatible out of the bed too," I told him. 'I would say that is far more important."

I nodded at his advice, the smile fading from my face. "I think we are. I love her very much."

“I wish love was all it took,” I murmured. Then I sighed and shook my head to clear it. “Forgive me, I do not mean to brood.”

I frowned slightly, but forced it away as I shook my head. "It is alright brother, it's my fault. I didn't mean to bring up anything difficult."

“If I didn’t speak of difficult thing, I’d have nothing to talk about right now,” I said with a chuckle. I took another piece of rabbit.
“So, how are you planning on telling father the news?”

I hesitated before answering, and it wasn't because I was worried about Alexei's feelings. "I... really don't know. I've run over it in my head again and again, but I don't know what's right."

I thought for just a moment. “I would suggest approaching it from the political side,” I told him. “He doesn’t care if you love her; tell her about how good it would be for Ruskovia politically.”

I snorted in grim amusement before swallowing my bite of rabbit. "You are right. Father cares for very little more than pushing our family to the top of the heap."

“True, so approach it from that angle and you should have an easier road,” I said, smiling at him.

“I’ll do all I can to help,” I told him. “Though as angry as he is going to be with me, it will likely be best to keep my name out of things.”

"It won't matter to Father, but I stand by you. No one deserves an unhappy union, no matter how important it might be politically," I said stoutly.

“Thank you,” I said, giving him a grateful smile. “It means a lot to me to know you understand.” With a sigh, I leaned back against my saddle. “Part of me wants to not go home, to just keep traveling. I know I must return though, for mother if nothing else.”

"Where do you think you might go, after?" I asked. I would miss him terribly, but I could understand wanting to escape. I knew only too well how oppressive it was to live at home when you were not the favoured son.

“Likely I will stay in Ruskovia,” I answered. “Once father gets over the initial disappointment, he may give me command of a legion again. I can spend my days out of the city but still being of some use.”

"Well, if you ever venture south again, you will always have a room in Marsilikos," I offered, knowing Lessa wouldn't mind.

"Good, we'll be very glad to have you," I said, extremely pleased both at the thought of having my first child and to have Alexei visit. I didn't want these next weeks to be the last time I saw my brother.

“Then it’s planned,” I said, still smiling. I stretched my shoulders and sighed slightly. “We should probably sleep, I’d like to get moving early tomorrow and cover as much ground as we can.”

I nodded, swallowed my last bite of rabbit, and began to clean up. It wasn't a difficult task, my brother and I were used to living simply when on the road. Soon enough we were into our bedrolls, the fire banked. "Goodnight Alexei."

“Goodnight Fydor,” I replied. Once I was still in my bedroll, I felt exhaustion – mental, emotional, and physical - crash into me like a rock slide. I was asleep before I even knew my eyes were closed.
