Eagerly I sipped the cool, sweet, thick liquid. It was delicious, but I had no idea what it was. "What is this?" I said. "The nectar of the gods?"

“Not quite,” I said with a laugh. “It’s lassi, yogurt and milk and mango. It helps with the spicier items.”

"Well it's wonderful," I said, before I kept eating. The meal was lovely, but there was a bit of tension in the air, not bad tension, but I kept getting the feeling that Isra's parents wanted to say things to me that they couldn't in front of their other children. Not that I was sure what to say myself. My palms were beginning to sweat, and it wasn't from the spices.

The meal was quieter than usual, but there was really nothing to be done about that. Soon it seemed everyone was done and Mama told my sisters to clean up while the four adults went into the front room.
Rising, I took Pierre’s hand and squeezed it reassuringly. We all returned to the front room and I sat next to Pierre on the couch. There were so many things I wanted to say, things I wanted to explain, but I knew I should hold my tongue for now.
Papa sat in his chair, his features having grown more serious now that it was just the four of us.
“Please do not take this as disrespect,” he said to Pierre. “I know you are from a good family, but are you the reason my daughter left the Night Court? Because of things you promised her?”

I paused to think, carefully phrasing my answer to the questions. Finally, I answered, holding his gaze as I did. "Your daughter, for all her love of me, is a woman of her own mind. I now have the means to bring Isra into my home and support her, and I have given her my word that I will ask the Queen for her hand. But while I was securing these means, Isra left the Night Court. I did not know that she had left until I wrote to her to let her know of my new situation." I took a deep breath. "I love your daughter, but she did not choose to leave the Night Court because of me."
I looked at Isra. "Isra, we have to tell them what happened."

The minute my father spoke, the meal I had eaten turned into burning stone in my stomach and I felt ill. I knew I was going to have to tell my parents what had happened. Shame filled me and it was all I could do not to cry.
“There was another man… he paid off my marque without me knowing it. Supposedly he did it so that I could be free to be with him, but then I found out that he had lied to me about some things and I refused to be with him. Pierre talked to me about living with him, though he made it clear then that he didn’t know if we could ever be married or have children. I went to the Second of Jasmine for council, hoping for guidance on what to do with my life. Satori…” I paused and wiped at the tears that had spilled over my lids. “He called me selfish and a disgrace to Jasmine. I left; I couldn’t stay there any longer.”
I looked up at my parents, afraid of what I might see. My mother was crying and I could see the anger seething in my father’s eyes.
“None of it matters now though. I love Pierre, I think I have since the first time we were together, and he loves me. Being with him is what I have wanted.”

The anger and sadness rolling off of Isra's parents made my heart sink. What if they blamed me for this? What if they didn't let us be together? "Everything your daughter says is true," I said. "I love her, and more than anything I want to be with her. I assure you, she will walk beside me as an equal partner, and she will want for nothing."

Though his jaw was tight, my father’s voice when he spoke was even and not at all disrespectful. “I can see that you have been good to my daughter,” he said to Pierre. “She is fortunate to have found a man like you who loves her.”
His gaze turned to me. “Isra, I am disappointed that you kept such things from your parents, that you did not tell us the truth when things were happening or at least when you came home. Right now I am very angry at the men who treated you so, and I am upset that you allowed yourself to be treated that way.”
My mother began to say something but my father cut her off. “I am happy that you have found love, but at this moment I am more disappointed in you.”
It was too much, even though I had known this was how he would react. Sobbing, I bolted from the room, heading out to the little backyard. I sank down onto a tree stump, covering my face with my hands and crying.

Open-mouthed, I looked from Isra's parents to her fleeing back, and then back at them. "I'll just...excuse me," I stammered, before following her out. She was sitting on a tree stump and sobbing, and I went to embrace her. "Easy love, it's all right," I said soothingly.

Pierre’s arms were around me and I buried my face against his chest, crying so hard I could barely breathe. It was only Pierre’s presence that kept me from completely breaking apart.
Eventually, the sobbing passed though the tears still streamed down my cheeks. “I…I’m..sss... sorry Pierre. I should have told them before so you didn’t have to go through this.”

"It's all right, love, I want to be here to support you," I said. "They're upset right now, but they'll get over it. The good news will override the bad, I'm sure."

“My father was so proud of me for going to the Night Court, I don’t know that he’ll ever get over this really,” I said, sitting up and wiping at my tears.

"What if you'd left absent Satori's cruelty?" I asked. "What if you'd left simply because it was time for you to do something else with your life? Would they have forgiven that?" I grasped her hands and looked into her face. "The way I see it, it was simply fate. At the same time that you left, the gods chose to bless us with the means to finally be together. What shame is there in that?"

“I know Pierre, there is no shame in that in your eyes or in the eyes of many people,” I said. “I just don’t know if my father will ever see it that way.” I pressed my eyes closed, trying to stop from breaking down again. “Please, can we go somewhere else? I can’t go back inside.”

"Yes you can, my love," I said. "Be brave. You're a grown woman, and even if you and your parents don't see eye to eye right now, fleeing won't help. We must show them by being brave and standing together that this is the right thing for you." I hugged her close. "We can wait out here a few minutes, or we can leave, but I want to make sure that in this heated moment, that you don't make a choice you will regret later."

“I know my parents, my father. There will be no talking to him and showing him the better side of things right now, not until he’s had time to calm down,” I said. “I am not going back inside, not right now. It will just make things worse.”

"I'll take you to my house, then," I said. "Though I don't want to leave without saying farewell and thank you. Will you give me a moment?"

“I don’t understand why you don’t believe me, but I’ll wait here,” I said, folding my hands in my lap. I knew Pierre meant well, but I also knew he didn’t know my parents and how poorly my father was going to react when he went back in there.

"I - " I took a deep breath. I tried to imagine what was going to happen if I went inside. There would be two deeply upset parents, two confused daughters and nothing but more trouble. "I do believe you. Forget what I said. We can leave now."

“Thank you,” I said, kissing his cheek and then standing, slipping my arm into his.

I led her around the house to the street. I had no carriage with me, and so we walked home, in a somber silence.
