"You are an angel," I told her, kissing her softly. "I'll be back soon."
It didn't take long to find a manservant who had seen an upset Marie head upstairs, so I went up there myself and knocked on her door.

Once Christophe had left, I looked around, but the arriving guests seemed to have ebbed for now. I took the opportunity to head into the room where the refreshments were. I saw Soliel and Ana at a table and headed over to them.
“I hope you are finding everything as delicious as I told them to make it,” I said, smiling.

The knock on my door startled me.
“Go away,” I said, certain it was Pierre. The bastard had likely followed me up here to tell me to behave like a good girl and not ruin his date.

Her answer surprised me, as it was quite out of character for her. "Marie, it's Christophe," I called softly.

“Oh gods…” I said, jumping from my bed and going to the door. I unlocked it and opened it enough for him to come in.
“I’m sorry Chris, I really didn’t think it would be you,” I told him, wiping my eyes.

I stepped inside, my brows furrowing with worry at the sight of tears in her eyes. "Are you alright, what's wrong?" I asked her softly. "Do I need to go rough someone up?"

“It’s Pierre,” I told him. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to make a fuss today. I just couldn’t stay down there with him. He’s such a lying hypocrite. I wish he would just go away forever.”

I chuckled at the sight of Synnove refusing the carrots, thinking on the children Jareth and I were planning on. It was a lovely thought. I couldn't wait for the playdates between Soleil and our babes.
I was still caught up in smiling at Synnove when Malabelle came over. "Oh yes, it's delicious," I told her with a smile. "You did a wonderful job, your house looks fantastic as well."

“Thank you. though Christophe’s sister Marie had more to do with it than I did,” I told her, laughing. “She was a huge help. She and his brothers are around here somewhere. Once he finds them I am sure he’ll bring them to meet you.”

"Showing up with Karina you mean? Come here," I said, drawing her into a hug. "It's alright, I know how awful he can be," I murmured into her hair. "I'm sure he did it just to get back at me. I visited him before the wedding and asked that he behave. He didn't like me telling him what to do. It's my fault, I'm sorry, I didn't expect him to pull something like this."

Sobbing, again, I pressed myself against Chris. “How can he be such an ass?” I asked bitterly when my tears had eased. “How can it be possible that he is as much my brother as you and Henri?” Not that Henri was much better any more. The awful things he’d carelessly said when we arrived still cut, and he had pretty much vanished since we had been here.
“I’m sorry Chris,” I whispered. “This is your wedding day; I shouldn’t be acting like this. I just… I hate him so much.”

"It's alright minette, it's alright," I murmured, holding her as she cried. I knew only too well how frustrating our eldest brother could be. "I understand."

He used the nickname he’d had for me when I was little and it only made me hate Pierre all the more. This was what Pierre had taken from Chris and me, the closeness that I had only ever had with him. I would never forgive Pierre, never.
“I love you,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around him and hugging him.

At her words, I smiled. "I love you too," I assured her, hugging her back for a moment before I spoke again. "I have something to hopefully cheer you up. Would you like to met your niece?"

If I thought this day could not get any stranger, I was about to be terribly surprised. Malabelle came over to chat. "The food is delicious," I told her. "I enjoyed the carrot salad very much."
At the mention of Christophe's siblings, I said, "Yes, I'm looking forward to meeting them very much. I thought I saw one or two that looked like they could be his relatives."

“I’ve not seen Henri since we returned, but Chris is off looking for Marie and Pierre,” I said, smiling. I looked at Synnove. “Would you like me to hold her while you eat?”

Synnove burbled something and reach out to Malabelle. "I don't think it's up to me," I said. "Please, you're welcome to hold her."

Smiling wide, I took the babe into my arms, settling her securely. “You are so beautiful little one,” I said, laughing softly as she reached for my nose. Her little hands were so perfect. She giggled and made happy noises. “Oh you are going to break hearts, aren’t you?”

“This is far better than I ever imagined it would be,” I said to Ana, though I didn’t look away from the baby in my arms. “How could anyone not just fall in love with her the moment they see her?”

The mention of cute boys made me blush to the very roots of my hair, and I ducked my head, hoping he wouldn’t notice. “Still, I don’t want to scare my niece the first time I meet her,” I said, hoping he would continue talking about his daughter. There was only one cute boy I whose opinion I cared about, and I still wished desperately that he was here.

"I really don't know," I said with a chuckle. I wondered if we would be seeing Malabelle pregnant in the near future, but I was not gauche enough to ask. "I know I was hooked. Look at those big blue eyes."

Just like Christophe’s, I thought. I could see so much of him in her.
I looked at Soliel. “I know I said it before, but it bears repeating, thank you so much for coming and for bringing her. I knew it would mean the world to Christophe, but I didn’t know how much it would mean to me as well,” I told her.

"Or are there a cute boys?" I asked, for I could think of no other reason for her to blush and get suddenly shy. I smiled at the idea. I wanted very much for my sister to be happy.

I should have known he’d not let me get away with distraction. He was not Pierre who would not have noticed my reaction, not Henri who wouldn’t have thought to ask.
“There is one I’ve met, but he’s not here so I don’t have to worry about impressing him,” I said, glancing up at Christophe, wondering if that would be enough or if he’d ask more – and not sure which I was hoping for.

I wanted desperately to talk to Chris about this, I had just not imagined it happening like this, today.
“Ferris,” I told him, feeling my lips curve into a joyful grin at just the mention of his name. “His name is Ferris, he’s from Alba.”

I could help but smile as Malabelle played with Synnove. For the first time, I was comforted by the fact that she was now Synnove's stepmother, rather than filled with trepidation. "I was happy to come," I said. "And it gives me such pleasure to see how much she loves you already."
