I nodded to the instructions. "Would those that completely ignore history repeat it?" I've heard that said before, but never really seen it come to pass. I really didn't want to anyway.

“To some extent probably” I replied as I settled the blanket on the mare’s back then slung the saddle across it and went behind her to look at it. “Looking from the tail forward helps you to see if the saddle is square on their back.”

I walked from where I stood to join Uncle to see what he was talking about. "I hope that won't happen for a long time."

I shrugged "as you know you have to constantly shift the saddle while ridding." I then set to tightening the cinch "you do not have to cut them in two with the cinch contrary to popular belief. But you do want to make sure it is tight. Some horses suck up air and hold it so that the cinch is loose. With those I have found it is best to ride them a bit and wait for them to deflate then get off and tighten it more. There is a loop as you can see to hold the tag end of the cinch but I like an over hand knot better." I showed her as I made the knot after tightening the cinch.

I watched as I watched him tightening the cinch. "Do the horses not like the cinch tight for some reason?" I asked.

I gave her a small smile “well by way of an answer we could find you’re most uncomfortable corset and I could see how tight I could get it by standing on your back while tugging the bindings as hard as I could.” I winked showing my jest “that is probably not unlike how a cinch feels.”

I rubbed my stomach consciously. I wasn't fond of corsets and wore them only when I absolutely had to. "Not fun." Though I did catch his wink and returned a smile.

“I think you see my point on several levels including the fact that you do not need to cut them in two as well as the need to possibly tighten things after your mount has relaxed.” I finished saddling the mare “then comes the bit and headstall. There are many, many kinds of bits and you have to find the one your horse takes best to. If you buy a horse from someone they should be able to tell you what bit seems to work. But sometimes a lot of problems can be remedied by trying a different bit. Head shaking, head tossing, making you pull harder on the reigns than you should have to, as well as holding the head high and seeming a bit on edge can all be signs you should try a different style of bit.”

"What does Bee take too?" I walked to where the bits and headstalls were, trying to figure out which one to grab of each. I didn't want to just grab a random bit and headstall and not have Little Bee not like it.

“A snaffle works just fine for her” I picked up her headstall complete with the jointed bit. “Keeps just the right amount of pressure on the bars as well as the corners of the mouth since she is a well broken mare.” I then held the bit in the flat of my hand and pressed it into her mouth while sliding the headstall over her ears.

I turned to watch Uncle put the bit and headstall on Little Bee. "She would be if you were giving her to an inexperienced rider, Uncle."

“True” I dipped my head and handed her the reigns. “There you go let me get my own mount” I moved to the stall that held the gelding I preferred. So many were so crazy about stallions it made me shake my head. Few stud colts should ever be left intact and in my opinion stallions tended to be more trouble than they were worth.

I accepted the reins and waited for Uncle, moving to the door of the stall to make sure I wouldn't really miss seeing him leave the stables when he was ready.

It did not take me long to saddle my own mount as I was not in mid instruction during the process. Thus I soon swung myself up and into the saddle before allowing the horse to walk out of the barn and then stopping to wait for my niece.

I walked Little Bee out of the stables and mounted, though it took me a bit before I actually pushed hard enough to get myself off the ground and into the saddle. I looked at Little Bee, as if expecting her to move to catch up to Uncle.

Once Alora had caught up I set a very, very sedate pace. It was easier on the butt after all and for the thousandth time I made a mental note to purchase a smooth ridding gaited horse from some of the mountain stock. “Well, I think we were about dinner” I glanced in her direction “does steak sound good to you?” I hoped it did as I was a confirmed carnivore with no intention of reforming my ways.

I was slightly surprised to find that Little Bee had as smooth of a gate she had for the pace we were going at. At the mention of dinner, steak being suggested, I nodded. "It does. It's been a while since I had some meat." I returned the glance. "Mother insisted on a nearly meat free diet for me. I didn't like it."

My sister apparently had some ideas as a mother that I did not particularly share. But now was not the time or the place to comment “Very well, I know a nice little place over in the palace district. It is called La Tonnelet and they specialize in meat and seafood.”

"Sounds nice. Lead the way." I motioned for him to take the lead to La Tonnelet.

I nodded and then set off in that particular direction whilst enjoying the sights and sounds of the bustling city.

I followed at the pace that was set and looked at the sights and heard the sounds of the city.
