I blushed a little. "You flatter me," I said. "I think I will never get used to being complimented."

“Would you like me to stop?” I asked with a playful grin.

I grinned at him, cheeks still pink. "I think even though I blush, I like it too much for you to stop."

"Oh good, because I would like hurt myself with the effort it would take to stop," I told her, smiling wide. "Beside, I really like it when you smile."

I blushed again. "Thank you," I said. "Smiling I certainly cannot help, for being with you is always an occasion to be happy."

“Now you’re going to make me blush and squirm with your compliments,” I teased, smiling at her and then taking another bite of food.

I laughed, before digging back into my meal. "I don't think I've ever seen you blush, or at least, hardly ever," I commented.

"I hardly ever do," I said, smiling at her between bites. 'But I think you might manage.'

"I will have to keep trying," I said, before segueing into a different topic. "So, if we are going to a masque, we should dress up, I think."

"That does seem the idea," I said, chuckling. "Do you already have a costume in mind?"

"I had one idea, but I am open to suggestions," I said. "I want something that is not too...er...revealing, I suppose." I cast my eyes down. "I don't think I could ever wear what some of the lords and ladies wear to such events."

"I think some of the outsits can't truly be called 'clothes'," I said with a chuckle. "What was your idea?"

"I thought I might go as the goddess Anahita," I replied. "I saw a painting of her once and it stuck with me. She's Akkadian," I clarified.

"Hmm, I don't know her," I said after another bite. "Is she the goddess of anything in particular?"

"Fertility, I think," I replied. "I think an obscure goddess is a good choice, people are bound to pick popular ones."

“Indeed,” I agreed, nodding. “Do you think there will be a fuss if people show up in the same costume?”

"I don't think I would fuss, but I can imagine such a thing occurring at a costumed fete," I said. "Have you ever seen that happen?"

“No, but I try to avoid or ignore any ruckus if it arises,” I said, chuckling.

I nodded. "Me too," I said, taking one of the last bites off my plate. "I prefer to stay out of trouble." I took a look at his plate. "How are you feeling?" I asked. "Nearly full?"

“Yes, quite near,” I said, smiling and setting down my fork. “This really was wonderful, Merav. Thank you.”

"You're welcome," I said. "Would you like some cake now, or would you like to digest a little?" This last was said with a smile.

“Cake now,” I said, grinning. “I made sure to save room.”

I grinned back. Standing up, I went and fetched the cake, two clean plates and a knife. "When is your birthday, Darien?" I asked, as I walked back to the table. Setting it down, I began to cut two slices.

“The seventh week of Autumn,” I answered. “Yours?”

"So it passed, and you did not mention it?" I said. "Next year I will have to make you a birthday cake." I thought a moment. "We actually have birthdays close together," I said. "Mine is the 4th week of Autumn."

I laughed. "Yes, I suppose I am guilty too," I said, putting a slice of cake before him. "Next year, I will be sure to make a big fuss," I jested.

I gave her another smile and then took a bite of the cake. It was delicious. Sweet but not too much and it had a wonderful texture.
“It’s very good,” I told her after I’d swallowed.
