I blushed and ducked my head, only to then look at him through my lashes.
"Thank you," I said, unable to think of anything else to say.

I smiled. "You're welcome," I said. "You'll learn quickly, I think, you'll have to, to get by in the city."

“I’ll keep that in mind,” I said, before taking another sip of ale. It went down easy this time now that I was prepared for it.

I nodded and smiled. "Come, let's talk about something else, I promise I can keep up a conversation about something other than work."

"What shall we talk about?" I asked with a smile.

I thought a moment. "Will you tell me more about your interests, or things you're hoping to do in the City?" I asked.

"I like to read and embroider," I answered. "The main thing I was hoping to do in the city was find work so that I could stay. I hadn't thought much beyond that."

"Well, you've got the last one covered, at least, now you can think of all the things to do ow that you no longer have to worry about employment," I said. "If you haven't seen the palace yet, that's something to do. There are many rooms that the public may visit, though not all of them, naturally."

“Oh no, I couldn’t,” I said, shaking my head slightly. “I don’t think I could visit the palace.”

“It just…it doesn’t seem right,” I answered after a moment. “The palace is for important people.”

"Blessed Elua cared naught for crowns or thrones," I quoted. "Besides, it's more like a...museum than anything else. You go to see the art, the books, the salons...I hear the Royal Archives are quite remarkable."

“Blessed Elua doesn’t reside in the palace and a back country girl like me has no place in the palace,” I answered, then took another drink of ale.

"All right," I said, not wanting to pressure her. I took a sip of my ale and leaned in. "Would you describe yourself as...confident?"

That was a very personal question and I leaned back slightly, unsure what he was trying to get at.
“I’ve not had many chances to find out if I’m confident or not,” I said, seeking to deflect.

I frowned, noticing her expression. "Forgive me," I said. "I just...we're going to be spending a goodly amount of time together, so it is important to me that I know what you are like. It is also important to me that you know what I am like, so..." I leaned back. "You can ask me things, too."

I looked at him for a moment, forming my response as I did. “You have hired me to clean, which you know I do well and you know both where I am staying and who my brother is so if I was to do anything so stupid as steal from you then you would know how to find me,” I tilted my head slightly, curiously. “Why do you need to know what I am like?”

I looked surprised. "Because," I said, "you're going to be family. It is important to me to know my family."
I heard a throat clearing above me. The waitress was back with our pies. Hurriedly, she set them down and went away. "I'm sorry if I have bothered you too much with my questions. We can relax and eat now. It smells good."

“I am sorry if I bothered you with my responses,” I said, looking down at my pie. I wasn’t hungry any longer, feeling as if I had done something wrong and offended him. Just my luck, the day I get a job I was going to lose it.

"You didn't bother me," I said. "I like talking. Also listening. It's another reason why I wanted us to get to know each other." The air settled uncomfortably around us, and I took a sip of ale. Gods, she was going to quit. I didn't want her to quit.

“I’m sorry,” I said again, sighing softly. “I guess my back country upbringing has left me unfit for good company.” I was going to save him the trouble of finding the words to let me go. “I understand if you’d rather have someone less rural working for you.”

I looked at her. "What are you talking about?" I asked. "I'm not going to fire you over this. Besides, you're off the clock. And you are perfectly fine company, better than fine."

I blushed softly. “Thank you,” I said softly. I looked up at him. “You are very good company as well.”

"Thank you," I replied. I gestured to the food before us. "Eat, you must be starving."

I smiled at him and then took a bite of my food. It was good. My own was better, but this wasn't bad.
"It's good," I said.

I nodded. "Mmm," I said. "I eat a lot foreign food, but sometimes, tavern fare is just what I need."

“Perhaps you’ll let me cook for you some time,” I said after another bite. “It’s nothing foreign, but I am a fairly good cook.” It would be different to cook for someone because I wanted to, not because I was expected to.

"Whatever you think you do best," I said. "I'm not at all picky. Except I don't much like anise."
