I went up the short walk to the door of the house, struggling to hang onto all the packages and items I'd bought today on my shopping spree. Tomorrow I would need to take the cloth, lace, and the pretty beads to the dressmakers, and talk to them about what I wanted. For now, I was concentrating on trying not to drop anything. I was doing fairly well until I got to the door itself. When I reached, carefully, for the doorknob, I fumbled the parcel that had my new slippers in it, and that caused an avalanche, ending in me dropping all but one of the packages that I'd held in my hands and arms. Feeling like an idiot, and a total clutz, I knelt to begin gathering my things, wishing Luc had been able to accompany me home.

On my way home from lunch I’d got distracted by a pretty face – and shapely rear – and had ended up following her into the wrong residential area. Thus, I was walking down an unfamiliar street heading back to the palace.
I was passing a house when I heard the unmistakable sound of items dropping. Looking that direction, I saw a woman trying to gather up a multitude of items. For some reason I decided to be helpful, call it proper etiquette training I guess, and I jogged up the walk to aid her.
“Looks like you could use another pair of arms to carry things,” I said, smiling and kneeling down to help gather items.

I gave a frustrated sigh, trying unsuccessfully to rearrange the things so I could hold them all. I was so busy concentrating on that that I missed the sound of approaching footsteps. When a man spoke up from so close, I was startled into dropping a couple of the packages I had managed to pick back up. Blinking in surprise, embarrassment, and disgust at myself, I turned to look at him, and my face started to burn. I just knew I must be turning bright red, but I was glad for the help, so I smiled as much as I could, and mumbled out my thanks.

“If you’ll get just a couple and open the door, I can get the rest,” I said, still smiling at her. She was rather fetching.

I sighed, but managed to smile my thanks, though I'm sure my face was still red. Picking up the few packages I'd dropped, I stood and opened the door, heistating a mere second, then entering the house. I turned to wait, holding the door so he could enter once he gathered the other packages.

She certainly was a quiet thing. I was beginning to feel like I was talking to myself. I gathered the rest of the packages and stepped inside.
“Where would you like them?”

I smiled as I closed the door behind him, then led the way into the small sitting room off the entryway. Setting ym own packages down, I indicated the table, "Here is fine. Thank you for helping." I curtsied, then stood to introduce myself properly. "I'm Rosanna de Beauchamp."

I set the packages down on the table and then bowed to her. “Shea de Vermandois,” I told her, smiling. “And I was glad to help.” Her name struck me as familiar. “Is your family from L’Agnace?”

"Thank you again." I blinked, a bit shocked when I recognised his name. The Vermandois name was well known in L'Agnace, and it surprised me to see him here. Nodding, I pushed away my stupor, "Yes, indeed we are," I couldn't help but return his smile, "We live only few hours from the city." He seemed friendly, and had been kind enough to help me bring my things inside.

I glanced down at the packages on the table when he motioned at them, then looked back up and smiled. "It was a most sucessful outing, yes." My smile deepened and a dimple peeked out when I remembered how nice a certain young man had been. Most helpful, much like the young man standing in front of me. And they were both quite handsome. This was the most attention I'd received from a non-related male in over a year, and it pleased me. Evidently, I was more ready to get back to an active social life that I had believed.

I sighed and shook my head. “I just had a blue gown made last week, and if I buy one more set of slippers I’ll need a new closet built,” I teased with a grin.

I couldn't help but laugh at his mock despair. His grin was contagious, so I had to grin back. Raising my hands in a helpless gesture, I shrugged, "What better excuse for more closet space?"

I laughed again, then shook my head in response to his sigh. "I'm afraid I can't help you, then. But I do thank you for lending me a helping hand, despite my inabiliaty to reciprocate." I paused for a moment, then nodded to myself. "I take that back. There is one way I can thank you, and that's with an invitation to the fete and dinner I'm having next week, to mark the end of a very long year of mourning." My smile faltered a bit then, as I recalled myself. "That's what the gown is for."

I smiled and nodded, "Shea, then." Recalling what we had been talking about a few minutes ago, I raised an eyebrow, then glanced down at the largest package on the table, the one with the midnight blue cloth I'd chosen for my gown. Looking back up at Shea, I gave him a questioning look, "Would you like to see the silk I chose for my fete gown?"

"Of course," I said, smiling. "I have to know if it looks too much like my gown so I know not to wear that dress to your fete."

“With your charm, I’m certain there will be several handsome young men at your fete,” I said, smiling. As we were still just standing in what was obviously a sitting room, I got the impression she had things to do. “Well, I should be taking my leave so you can get to whatever you were coming home for. I will see you at the fete.”

I did have things to do, but now I realised I had been most rude to a man who was so nice in helping me. "I apologize for keeping you standing here, Shea. Please forgive my terrible manners. I do have things to do," I looked down at the table, then back up, a sheepish smile on my face, "And I will definitely look for you at my fete."

Honestly, I had been expecting her to go ahead and ask me to sit and at least offer me a drink of something. Apparently my words had not been taken as the nudge towards courtesy that they had been.
“I’m staying at the palace, you can send the details of date and time of your fete to me there,” I said, inclining my head. “Until then.” I turned and headed out the door, resuming my walk back to the palace.
