“My mother died several years ago. I’m the only girl so it fell to me to see to such things,” I said, trying to not sound bitter.

I frowned. "I have never understood such a thing," I said. "If you are able, you should contribute, whether you are a son or a daughter. It was unfair for the whole responsibility of the household to fall on you."

“My oldest brother was in the army, Christophe was here in the city, and Henri took to the fields,” I replied. “I was the one who was left, and as a girl in the farmlands tending house was my option.”

"Oh, please don't misunderstand, I never meant to say that if you wanted to keep house you should not," I said hastily. "I only meant that if you wanted to do something else, it wasn't right that you were forced to keep house."

"Oh no, I agree with you. I guess I'm not at good at hiding my unhappiness at that whole situation as I thought I was," I said, smiling at him.

I laughed. "No," I said. "But who cares? You've got just as much a right to be happy as anyone else, and if you're out of that situation, good for you."

“I can tell you did not grow up in a small community in Camlach,” I said, chuckling. “I like your position.”

I laughed. "No, I didn't," I said. "If there's one thing I learned growing up Shahrizai, it was how to be happy. We are very good at that." I smiled. "I promise, as your employer, to treat you with respect and fairness," I said. "If something happens or goes wrong, please do not hesitate to come to me."

My smile turned a little shy. “I have every faith that you will be fair and respectful. You’ve been wonderful thus far,” I said softly.

"Good," I said. "And thank you. I am sure you will be a wonderful addition to the shop."

A soft blush warmed my cheeks. “Thank you,” I said, stealing another glance at him.

I noticed her blush, and it made me smile. We turned the corner, and up ahead I could see, or rather hear, Night's Doorstep. "Have you ever been to this part of town before?" I asked.

“No,” I answered. “Today was the first time I’d been out by myself since we arrived.”

I looked at her, wide-eyed with surprise. "Truly?" I asked. "I hope I have not overwhelmed you."

“A little, but in a very wonderful way,” I answered, peeking at him through my lashes again.

"Well, if it's in a wonderful way, then I am happy," I said. "But still, I shall make sure you are home at a reasonable hour. I would not want to cause worry to your brothers or Mala."

Likely Malabelle would worry before any of my brothers.
"I'm an adult, I can stay out as long as I like," I said with a grin.

I chuckled. "As you say," I said, as we entered Night's Doorstep.
