In going through the matters of my estate, I had come upon one that I could not settle on my own. There were times when things just had to be taken to a ruling authority. I’d sent missives to Duc Clairmont and we’d arranged a meeting.
I arrived at the agreed time and was shown to a sitting room to wait.

I had received a letter from the Duc de Mauvais, asking for a meeting. I accepted readily, glad that my new... vassals were speaking to me. I really did want to do as good of a job for my people as I could.
I was informed that the Duc had arrived, and went down to the sitting room. "Duc de Mauvais, good morning," I said, extending my hand with a smile.

“Duc de Clairmont, good morning,” I said, shaking his hand and bowing the polite amount. “Thank you for seeing me.”

"Of course," I replied with an easy smile. "Please, sit down. Would you care for a refreshment?"

"Only if you are having something," I answered as I took a seat in a chair.

"Brandy alright?" I asked, going over to the side table and pouring a measure for myself as I waited for his answer.

“Yes, thank you my lord,” I said, nodding. I knew life went on, but it was odd seeing someone so young as Sovereign. I’d never had to deal with Sly in this role, Clovis had been the last true Sovereign in my eyes and I’d taken him home to be buried. I would give Lucien my respect though, he’d done nothing not to deserve it.

"Oh, please call me Lucien. We're both Ducs after all," I told him with a smile after pouring his measure. I brought the glasses over and handed him one before taking a seat across from his.

“Thank you, Lucien,” I said, smiling as I took the glass. I had a sip of the brandy and then set the glass aside, it was quite good of course but I didn’t want to indulge as yet.

"Not at all," I replied, shifting slightly to settle further into my seat. "Would it be too presumptuous of me to ask to call you by your given name?" I added with a wry smile.

“Not at all,” I said, chuckling and shaking my head. “Forgive me for not offering it. This is my first time in this situation as an actual Duc, I guess I’m still rusty.”

"Not to worry," I replied with a small grin. "Social niceties have never been my strong suit, who am I to cast stones? Now if you'll forgive me if I cut to the chase, what brings you here today Alain?"

“It’s a matter regarding water rights on the west side of my lands,” I said. “There’s a section of river and my neighbor is diverting the water to his crops.”

"And this is an issue for your own crops?" I asked as I way to open the door for further explanation.

“Actually it’s affecting my ability to water my herds. The water from this river is the purest of any that flows onto my lands and we’ve always used it to water our herds,” I explained. “I’ve offered to bear the cost of diverting another stream to water his crops with but he’s refused.”

"Do you know what other water sources he has access to?" I wondered aloud.

“He has a lake and a river, both of which he’s used up until recently. He’s trying to expand his crops, beyond what his land can sustain in my opinion, and that’s why he’s taking the new water,” I answered.

"Alright," I replied, thinking for a moment. "Well let me talk to him. What did you say his name was? Perhaps we can find a compromise that will keep your herds watered and still let him expand if that is his wish."

“Baron de Norom,” I answered. “And as I said, I am more than willing to bear the cost of diverting from another source. He just won’t listen to reason.”

"Hopefully a neutral third party might have more luck," I said with a chuckle. "Are you looking to expand your herds yourself Alain?"

“A little, but mostly it’s just through reproduction. I’ve been refining a new breed of horse and they are to the point where I can start breeding true. The offspring will be mostly sold so there is just a minor expansion. I just want to be able to ensure they and my other herds, are given the best water to drink,” I told him.

“I’ve been breeding horses from Aragonia with those from The Umaiyyat. I’ve managed to breed true for strength, endurance, and speed,” I told him with a proud smile.

“Whenever you’d like to see them, please feel free to come by,” I said, smiling. “I have probably taken up enough of your time, I should let you return to other matters.” I was enjoying the time with him, but I didn’t want to burden him.

"Yes well, it's been quite the change," I said with an easy smile. "But slowly I'm coming to enjoy it. Not the paperwork," I added with a laugh. "But the job as a whole."
