"All of them? No," I answered truthfully. "But I truly enjoyed most of them, and the others I mostly enjoyed. For the most part." I chuckled before taking a bite. My paella was very good.

I ate for a moment before looking at him again. “What’s it like? Sex, I mean.”

"It's... it can be so many different things. But definitely enjoyable," I said with a chuckle.

“That’s all anyone ever says,” I said with a sigh. I took a long drink of my sangria before having another bite of food. I was getting full, there was going to be so much left, what a waste.

"Well... what specifics are you looking for?" I asked, looking at her as I continued to eat. I wasn't sure how to answer her question.

“I don’t know,” I said, twirling the stem of my glass between my fingers. “All anyone ever says that it’s amazing and that’s if you can get them to say anything at all.”

"Do you want me to tell you about my first?" I asked. "I'm sure it's different for women, but..."

I glanced at him and then back at my glass. “No,” I said, shaking my head. “I’ll just find out for myself.” My eyes moved around the restaurant, toying with the notion of excusing myself from the table and finding the boy who’d been looking at me before. I’d drag him out into the alley and tell him he could have me, it just had to be quick. Likely I could be back before Chris even finished eating.

"Alright," I replied, stopping a sigh that wanted to escape as she pulled away from me again. Then a thought occured to me. "You know where we should go after lunch? If you don't have somewhere else you wish to go of course. L'Roches."

“L’Roches?” I asked looking at him again. “I’ve never heard of it. Is it a store?”

"It is. And if you tell Pierre that I ever took you there, I'm dead meat," I said with a chuckle. "They sell aides d'amour."

My attention focused so sharply I could almost hear the snap of it. “You know I won’t tell, besides, it’s not like I’m not of age,” I said. “Yes, I think we should go there next.”

I chuckled at her reaction. "Good," I replied after swallowing, then touched my collar. "It's where Mala bought me this."

“It really suits you,” I said, looking at his collar and then back to his gaze. “Do you enjoy wearing it?”

I looked at his collar again and then settled back in my chair.
“It suits you,” I said again. “I’ve never seen you so happy, so content.”

"Well, the last time you saw me, I was pretending to be something I wasn't," I replied, speaking of going back for Mama's funeral. I had arrived to find all the neighbours holding the belief that I had gone to the City to join the Palace Guard. It still sent a shard of ice through my heart that my mother had been that ashamed of me. "And the time before that, our parents were telling me to leave. Anything would be happier and more content than that."

“Indeed,” I said, swirling my glass again. “It’s amazing how being forced to live a life that is not of your choosing can kill your spirit and how you can come to resent everyone that had anything to do with it.” I drained my glass in one drink and then set it down.

I gave her my full attention at that, the last remnants of my meal forgotten for the moment. "And what have you pretended to be Marie?" I asked gently.

“A good, dutiful daughter, content to clean house and cook meals, willing to live her life trapped and alone even with family around me while I die inside,” I said, my voice growing softer and pained as I spoke. I sat up, wiping absently at my eyes. “Can we go soon?”

"Of course love," I replied softly. "We'll go and you can start living."
I signaled the server, and paid him when he came over. I drank the rest of my sangria, and then stood, offering Marie my hand. "Shall we go expand your horizons?" I asked with a smile.

I took his hand, squeezing it tight as I stood. I nodded, not trusting myself to speak right then. I was so scared that this was all going to be taken from me, that I was going to get a taste of freedom, of living, and lose it all again.

She was fair trembling, but I knew the fear would pass when she saw that I wasn't going to let Pierre drag her back to Camlach. Father could do his own housework.
So I gave her a smile and led her out. I would keep her safe enough to actually experience life.
