D'Angelines inhabit Terre d'Ange. They were one of the most primitive peoples on earth until Elua and the Companions (Naamah, Eisheth, Kushiel, Anael, Camel, Azza and Shemhazai) descended to earth and brought with them everything a people would need. Knowledge, language, art, science, everything... all ransacked from Heaven. D'Angelines follow Elua's simple percept: Love as thou wilt. They have a keen beauty to them and everything they do - so much that you could pick out a single D'Angeline in a crowd of foreigners or even a D'Angeline seal on an envelope. (Even their engineers are said to value form over function.)
Now each of the Companions brought something with them...
There was an Eight Companion, Cassiel who stood by Elua and defended him when the One God turned his back on his son. Elua was born of Yeshua's (Jesus') crucified blood and the Magdelene's tears. Mother Earth served as his womb and embraced him. Cassiel protected Elua where God would not.
Now the D'Angelines live in a realm of beauty and love, spending all their time in luxuries. Even the lowest commoner has spare time to spend in luxury, drinking wine or going to the theatre. Even slaves have rights and can earn their freedom in a fair enough way. Guild laws protect even their version of prostitutes (the Servants of Naamah, although they are more highly thought of them whores) and to rape or violate anyone is punishable by death. Forced marriages aren't even allowed because they breach Elua's percepts.
Now picture this perfect kingdom that didn't have to work too hard to get there, although now they have to to protect it. They've just had an invasion only a few decades before, by the Skaldi with the help of some of Terre d'Ange's own high ranking nobles (although it was all arranged by one master mind, now exiled in Caerdicci Unitas). Just when they recovered from the invasion, Khebbel-im-Akkad declared war upon them. And now with the second war just finished and ties restored with their neighbours, our story begins.
You can think of it this way to help a bit -> Terre d'Ange is like an idealistic, super-wealthy Renaissance or Medieval France. The only different is they follow Elua and his Companions instead of Christianity (which has no such name in the books, although Jesus is refered to as Yeshua and his fellowers the Yeshuites). Khebbel-im-Akkad is like the middle-east and Tiberium is Rome (the city/country), while Caerdicci Unitas is what is left of Rome after the Empire falls. Alba and Eire are the United Kingdom, and Skaldia is like Germany/Russia coupled with the Norse traditions (Odhinn = Odin).
Now each of the Companions brought something with them...
- Naamah: the arts of love making and sex
- Anael: husbandry and agriculture
- Azza: forbidden knowledge (how to chart a course by the stars, ect.)
- Shemhazai: science and written language
- Eisheth: medicine, literature and poetry
- Camael: art of defense and combat, swordplay, ect.
And - Kushiel: punishment and chastisment
